About The Position

The Department of Geological Sciences at California State University Bakersfield accepts applications on an ongoing basis for our pool of part-time lecturers. The Department of Geological Sciences at California State University Bakersfield is accepting applications for part-time lecturers for a pool from which instructors will be considered for appointments as they become available for Fall Semester 2026 and/or Spring 2027. Appointments are often made with short notice just prior to the start of the semester. Part-time lecturer duties include instruction, class preparation, grading, and office hours. Other duties may be assigned based on Departmental needs. Course assignments, including dates, time, and modality, are made by the Department Chair in consultation with the Dean. We seek qualified candidates for our part-time lecturer pool to teach undergraduate and graduate geoscience and environmental science courses. Opportunities to teach in the evenings and/or during regular business hours may become available. We are particularly interested in instructors to teach courses in Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, and Engineering Geology, as well as general education courses that include physical geology and environmental science. Preference will be given to those applicants who are able to participate on weekend field trips and those able to teach in-person laboratories as well as in-person lectures. Teaching materials are available for most courses. Applicant pools are used to fill short-term temporary Lecturer positions across our campus with the possibility of rehiring. Appointments may last from one day to a whole semester. This applicant pool may be used to fill vacant positions on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Applications in this pool ad will only be good for the current academic year. This pool will be closed effective May 31st. If you wish to be considered for the next academic year, you will need to apply to the new pool as it becomes available by June 15th.

Requirements

An advanced degree in geoscience or environmental science

Nice To Haves

A PhD in geoscience or environmental science
For introductory-level courses, a record of successful teaching in geoscience or environmental science at the university level.
For upper division and/or graduate-level courses, a record of successful teaching at the university level in similar courses and/or significant professional experience relevant to the course topic.
Able to participate on weekend field trips
Able to teach in-person laboratories as well as in-person lectures
