About The Position

The University of North Texas College of Music is seeking an energetic artist/teacher who will steward a large and active university athletic band program and become an integral part of a team of educators who have developed one of the nation’s leading wind studies programs. This faculty appointment resides in the Division of Conducting and Ensembles in the UNT College of Music. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to recruit and mentor undergraduate music education majors and graduate students in wind band conducting. The candidate should have the ability to maintain high visibility in the field locally, regionally, and nationally. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be able to create and maintain positive relationships within the College of Music, North Texas Athletics, the President’s Office, the UNT Alumni Association, and the community at large.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in conducting or music education required.
  • Documented ability to organize, teach, and manage a complex and comprehensive athletic band program.
  • Documented ability to teach/conduct an excellent concert band.
  • Clear evidence of collegiality.
  • Emerging or established reputation with public school or university equivalent teaching experience.
  • Outstanding musician and teacher who has excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to recruit and retain students.
  • Fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for students.

  • An established record as an artistic wind band conductor/teacher

Responsibilities

  • Providing musical and organizational leadership for all of the groups in the athletic band program, including the recruitment and retention of the 425-member Green Brigade Marching Band and the Pep Bands, which includes basketball and volleyball responsibilities.
  • Conducting the Wind Ensemble both semesters.
  • Teaching undergraduate wind literature in the fall and instrumental conducting in the spring.
  • Committee and other service in the Division, College, and University.
  • Support of the music and music education professions through committee service, etc.
  • Support of College audition days and other recruiting efforts.
  • Effective engagement as needed with major donors to the athletic band program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Division of Conducting and Ensembles and/or the Dean of the College of Music.
