About The Position

The Department of American Indian Studies at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach AIS 125: American Indian Film. This course explores the decolonization of media and narrative forms, with a focus on film, television, and writing within American Indian and Indigenous contexts. It engages with and analyzes how Native American and Indigenous filmmakers reclaim and reshape their narratives through visual sovereignty. The aim is to dismantle colonial viewpoints and promote an understanding of Indigenous self-determination and representation in media through a variety of filmic genres and media platforms.

Requirements

  • A master's degree
  • A clear commitment to American Indian epistemology, in terms of theory, methodology, pedagogy as they pertain to the field of American Indian Studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sovereignty, culture, and tribal histories and federal Indian policy and law.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in collaboration with California American Indian tribes, communities, organizations and/or other American Indian nations in the US.
  • Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

  • Evidence in developing curriculum in decolonization, tribal sovereignty, resistance, resurgence and resilience and courses addressing settler colonialism.
  • Evidence of working with American Indian tribes and communities.
  • Evidence of working collaboratively with other departments and programs across disciplines.
  • Intercultural competence and a commitment to serving our campus community as it relates to teaching and, as applicable, service.
