About The Position

Join our talented team as we embark on an uncharted gaming adventure! We're on the lookout for a passionate Lead VFX to contribute their skills to a cutting-edge, PC/Console video game project. Partnering with the license Dungeons and Dragons, this stylized survival craft game promises to redefine the genre and capture the imaginations of players worldwide. As the Lead VFX Artist, you will define and drive the visual effects strategy for a major, officially announced Dungeons & Dragons cross-platform title. You will operate within a lean, high-impact local team, working in close partnership with our Senior VFX Artist, to ensure artistic consistency and high technical standards. A significant portion of the VFX volume will be handled via outsourcing (OS); therefore, your role is dual-faceted: you are both a high-level individual contributor capable of rapid prototyping and a meticulous manager of external partners. You will ensure that every spell, environmental effect, and combat ability feels authentic to the lore while maintaining peak performance in engine (Unity) across all platforms.

Requirements

  • Expert-level knowledge of VFX Graph and Shuriken. You must understand the specific strengths of each system to maximize efficiency.
  • Ability to work with Shader Graph to create custom behaviors like stylized dissolves and distortions that remain performant, (with the help of our tech-art team).
  • Deep understanding of real-time constraints, including draw calls and memory management for PC, and Console (and potentially Mobile).
  • Strong proficiency in Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max for creating custom meshes, UVs, and vertex data specifically for VFX.
  • A proven portfolio showing an appetite for stylized, non-photorealistic aesthetics and a keen eye for color theory.
  • A genuine passion for the Dungeons & Dragons universe and an interest in translating classic fantasy tropes into compelling visual language.
  • Excellent sense of timing, weight, and secondary motion to make magical effects feel powerful and responsive.
  • Proven track record of managing external vendors, providing clear paintovers, and delivering structured, constructive feedback.
  • Ability to track complex workflows across different studios while maintaining a lean and agile internal process.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of C# for tool automation or supporting custom engine hooks.
  • Experience with CPU and GPU profiling using Unity analysis tools and other 3rd party tools to manage performance spikes and distribute the workload on the hardware in the best way possible.
  • Experience using Houdini or Blender Geometry Nodes to generate complex assets or simulations.
  • Interest in developing or prototyping dedicated shaders to push the visual boundaries of the project.
  • A deep-rooted interest in fantastic universes and the specific lore of Dungeons & Dragons.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical and artistic point of contact for external VFX studios. Create comprehensive briefs, technical documentation, and quality benchmarks to ensure external deliveries meet studio standards.
  • Own the VFX roadmap and tracking via Jira or Basecamp. Monitor milestones, manage feedback loops, and ensure the outsourcing pipeline remains scalable and efficient.
  • Partner with the Art Director, Animation Director and Technical Art Director to establish the VFX style guide. Work closely with Game Design to prototype and iterate on gameplay-critical feedback regarding readability, timing, and impact.
  • Support the environment team in developing immersive, atmospheric effects that enhance the world-building and narrative.
  • Direct the creation of effects that align with a high-end stylized aesthetic, emphasizing strong silhouettes and chiseled visual landmarks.
  • Quickly build functional VFX prototypes for new hero skills and abilities to validate gameplay feel and timing before moving to final production.
  • Set the technical standards for performance with the help of the Technical Art Director. Implement clever optimization solutions to ensure high-quality visuals on low-end devices without impacting performance.
  • Oversee the seamless integration of all effects into Unity, ensuring assets are correctly tagged, layered, and optimized for cross-platform deployment.
