Lead Technician, Electrical Assembly Testing

Commonwealth Fusion Systems•Devens, MA
•$36 - $41•Onsite

About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a Lead Technician to oversee the execution, safety, and scheduling of testing across Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (I&C), and Fiber Optics. The role leads a blended team of internal technicians and specialized vendor partners, ensuring testing, troubleshooting, and assembly milestones are completed safely and efficiently. The Lead Technician serves as an operational bridge between Test Implementation Engineers, Responsible Engineers (REs), and technicians working in the manufacturing environment. Candidates are expected to have deep subject-matter expertise in at least one of the three domains, rather than expertise in all three. The role uses that primary expertise while learning the operational basics of the other domains to schedule work, remove roadblocks, and manage specialized personnel. The position oversees Electrical and I&C activities such as high-voltage setups, Paschen testing, loop checks, electrical diagnostics, and instrument verification. It also oversees Fiber Optics activities, including handling, routing, splicing, and testing optical fibers using measurements such as attenuation, insertion loss, and spectral analysis with tools including OTDR and OSA. This is a full-time, onsite role. The position pays $36–$41 per hour, plus equity and benefits. Occasional travel or work at night, on weekends, or on call may be required. The work takes place in a facility with industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage and current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Mid-level proficiency with Microsoft or Google productivity software.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in Electrical testing, Instrumentation and Controls (I&C), or Fiber Optics, including handling, splicing, and OTDR testing.
  • Experience in a leadership, supervisory, or Lead Technician capacity, directing technicians’ daily work or managing vendor partnerships.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and testing procedures.
  • Experience documenting hardware issues, managing NCRs, and working with engineering teams to resolve procedural friction.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent testing schedules and prioritize critical-path deliverables.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, type, and stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in a facility containing industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights, weekends, or on call occasionally.
  • Compliance with U.S. export control laws is required; any employment offer is contingent on the need for such compliance.

Nice To Haves

  • Cross-domain experience, such as electrical experience combined with fiber-optic experience.
  • Licensed Journeyman or Master Electrician.
  • Experience with rough-vacuum hardware such as pumps, hoses, and KF fittings.
  • Experience with leak testing using mass spectrometers, pressure proofing, or low-voltage testing.

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily execution, assign crew tasks, and schedule shifts in alignment with the SATP Floor Ops Strategy.
  • Lead morning daily syncs and oversee vendor partnerships.
  • Conduct pre-test walkdowns, verify Bills of Materials (BOMs), and ensure tools and materials are staged.
  • Coordinate schedule execution with Test Implementation Engineers.
  • Manage and document Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
  • Troubleshoot test anomalies and work with Responsible Engineers (REs) to resolve technical roadblocks.
  • Enforce EHS safety protocols, including LOTO, exclusion zone management, and high-voltage and cryogenic safety standards.
  • Mentor and support technicians and help develop an internal succession pipeline for future technical leads.
  • Manage execution of Electrical and I&C work, including high-voltage setups, Paschen testing, loop checks, electrical diagnostics, and instrument verification.
  • Manage execution of Fiber Optics work, including handling, routing, splicing, and testing fibers, and taking attenuation, insertion loss, and spectral analysis measurements.
