About The Position

Omitron is hiring a Lead Systems Engineer focused on process and documentation for the SOLACE team, based in its Colorado Springs, Colorado office. SOLACE develops modernized astrodynamics applications that support the U.S. Space Force’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA) mission areas. The applications are developed using an Agile approach as direct drop-in replacements for legacy applications. The role owns the team’s processes, process documentation, and delivery tracking. It leads Agile ceremonies, manages Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) deliverables from drafting through government acceptance, and keeps work visible and on schedule in GitLab and JIRA. The position applies systems engineering methods to identify and improve workflow problems. It works closely with the SOLACE Lead Software Engineer, who owns technical direction, and supports the Program Manager with status reporting and team coordination. The position is accountable for the software engineering lifecycle process, including requirements, development, test, delivery, and government acceptance; process documentation; delivery and process metrics; requirements traceability; CDRL planning and delivery; Agile facilitation; work tracking; and schedule, risk, and status reporting. It reports to the SOLACE Program Manager. The work is based in Omitron’s Colorado Springs office, with hybrid to full-time in-office presence as necessary for project success. Omitron is an aerospace engineering and information technology small business headquartered in Beltsville, Maryland, with a Colorado Springs field office and personnel at operational sites nationwide. Founded in 1984, it provides engineering services and product development to government and industry customers across civilian and military aerospace programs. The company describes its workplace as committed to innovation, collaboration, equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, and belonging.

  • Experience leading Agile/Scrum ceremonies for a software development team, including daily stand-ups.
  • Hands-on experience using JIRA and GitLab to plan, track, and report team work, including boards, workflows, issues, and merge request status.
  • Experience managing CDRLs or equivalent contract deliverables on a DoD or government program, from drafting through delivery.
  • Systems engineering experience, including requirements management, traceability, and process definition.

  • Experience supporting Space Force SSA or SDA programs, astrodynamics software, or operations at Vandenberg SFB, Schriever SFB, or Naval Support Facility Dahlgren.
  • Familiarity with software DIDs such as the Software User Manual, Software Design Description, and Software Test Description.
  • Experience with CMMI or similar process maturity frameworks.

  • Map team workflows, identify bottlenecks and handoff gaps, and implement measurable process improvements using systems engineering methods.
  • Define delivery and process metrics with the Program Manager and Lead Software Engineer, track them every sprint, and use them to guide improvements.
  • Baseline current performance before process changes and report whether changes affect the relevant metrics.
  • Maintain requirements traceability from contract and user requirements to delivered capabilities, and track verification that applications function as drop-in replacements for legacy counterparts.
  • Maintain current process documentation, including SOPs, checklists, and templates.
  • Support process maturity and compliance efforts, such as CMMI, as required.
  • Manage the full CDRL lifecycle, including planning, author assignments, internal review, configuration control, submission, and tracking government comments through closure.
  • Maintain a CDRL schedule tied to contract due dates and program milestones, and raise schedule risks early.
  • Coordinate with engineers and subject matter experts to gather technical input; write, edit, and format documentation to applicable DoD Data Item Descriptions (DIDs).
  • Ensure delivered documents are accurate, consistent, version-controlled, and have correct markings, including distribution statements and data rights legends.
  • Lead daily stand-ups and facilitate Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, retrospectives, backlog refinement, and Program Increment (PI) planning.
  • Configure and maintain JIRA and GitLab boards, workflows, issue templates, and dashboards so work status is clear to the team and leadership.
  • Track sprint and PI progress, dependencies, and blockers, and follow up until blockers are cleared.
  • Work with the Lead Software Engineer to write and maintain acceptance criteria and definitions of done.
  • Prepare status reports, metrics, and briefings on schedule, deliverables, and risks for the Program Manager and government stakeholders.
  • Maintain the team’s risk, issue, and action item logs.
  • Coordinate with lateral development and user teams to deconflict schedules and dependencies across concurrent efforts.
  • Support the Program Manager with team administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Deliver CDRLs on or before contract due dates and close government comments within the agreed review cycle.
  • Keep agreed delivery and process metrics tracked each sprint and visible on team dashboards; document, baseline, and evaluate process changes against those metrics.
  • Surface blockers early and follow them to closure, keeping leadership informed of schedule and risk.
