Lead Software Engineer, Gen AI
About The Position
The Lead Software Engineer will work on Generative AI projects focused on building assistants, agents, GenAI tooling, and software. The role contributes to developing and deploying AI solutions at Cat Digital, Caterpillar’s digital and technology arm, which builds digital solutions using data, technology, advanced analytics, telematics, and AI capabilities. The engineer develops GenAI solutions with Python and object-oriented programming principles; implements CI/CD pipelines; and deploys applications and services on AWS. The work uses frameworks including LangChain, LangGraph, Semantic Kernel, and Crew.ai, and applies knowledge of large language models and prompt engineering. The role also involves collaborating with data scientists to productionize analytics solutions and assisting with machine-learning and AI pipelines. The position may be based in Chicago, Illinois; Peoria, Illinois; Broomfield, Colorado (Denver); or Irving, Texas (Dallas). Relocation assistance is not available. Visa sponsorship is not available.
Requirements
- Knowledge of software development tools and activities, and ability to produce software products or systems in line with product requirements.
- Knowledge of the software development life cycle and ability to use a structured methodology to deliver and manage software products.
- Knowledge of software product design and ability to convert market requirements into product designs.
- Knowledge of technical aspects of software products and ability to design, configure, and integrate them.
- Knowledge of software product testing and ability to design, plan, and execute testing strategies to ensure quality and adherence to requirements.

- Ability to manage larger and more complex projects as a technical lead.
- Software development experience and solid working knowledge of object-oriented programming principles.
- Experience designing and developing software applications in Python and/or GoLang.
- Experience with Python libraries such as FastAPI, LangGraph, and LangChain.
- Experience using Git version control on medium to large teams.
- Exceptional communication skills and experience working on cross-functional teams.
- Experience deploying software using GitHub Actions or similar tools.
- Experience with AWS components such as SageMaker Studio, Lambda, API Gateway, and RDS.
- Technical writing skills.
Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy generative AI solutions using Python and object-oriented programming principles.

- Deploy solutions on AWS using CloudFormation.
- Work with frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, Semantic Kernel, and Crew.ai.
- Apply large language model and prompt-engineering concepts.
- Develop and deploy services using FastAPI on AWS.
- Collaborate with data scientists to refactor analytics solutions for production, scalability, and efficiency.
- Assist in developing machine-learning and AI pipelines using Apache Airflow.
- As a technical lead, manage larger and more complex projects.
