Lead Site Reliability Engineer

Allegion•Carmel, IN

About The Position

Allegion is seeking a Lead Site Reliability Engineer to serve as a technical authority on its SRE team. This senior individual-contributor role shapes reliability architecture across multiple products, governs SLO and error-budget frameworks, and guides tooling and automation decisions to maintain highly available systems at scale. The position leads through technical depth and cross-functional influence, mentors engineers, and sets standards rather than managing headcount. The role requires legal authorization to work in the United States; Allegion does not intend to sponsor employment visas for this position.

Requirements

  • Degree in computer science, networking, or a related IT field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of combined software/IT experience, including at least 5 years in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or systems reliability.
  • Demonstrated experience owning SLI/SLO design, error-budget policy, and capacity planning across multiple services or products.
  • Track record leading incident response and blameless postmortems, including for high-complexity or high-impact incidents.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform, AWS or Azure, and container orchestration such as Kubernetes, EKS, or AKS.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep/ARM, and CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitLab.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using Python, Go, Bash, or similar.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Sentry, Elastic, CloudWatch, or Azure Monitor.
  • Understanding of networking principles, TLS/encryption, REST APIs, firewalls, and load-balancing/reverse proxies.
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend reliability and automation tooling based on organizational needs, maturity, scalability, and cost.
  • Ability to mentor and influence engineering practices without direct management authority.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to senior management.
  • Experience working with and leading remote or distributed teams.
  • Passion for SRE, Agile, and security practices.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; employment visa sponsorship is not intended for this position.

  • Familiarity with SOC 2 or similar compliance and audit processes.
  • Experience with configuration-management tools such as Ansible.
  • Experience setting up performance or load-testing environments.

  • Define and govern SLO/SLI, error-budget, RPO, MTTA, and MTTR frameworks across multiple products.
  • Lead capacity planning and shape reliability architecture across the production ecosystem.
  • Serve as the SRE technical authority on cross-functional projects, working directly with engineering management and partner teams.
  • Evaluate reliability tooling and automation frameworks based on organizational needs, maturity, scalability, and compatibility with the existing observability stack.
  • Lead incident response and blameless postmortems for high-complexity, high-impact incidents.
  • Reduce toil through automation and influence broader reliability culture and practices.
  • Design SLO frameworks, observability pipelines for metrics, logs, and traces, and incident-management practices across services and teams.
  • Own reliability for critical or high-complexity services, translating system requirements into SLO, SLI, RPO, MTTA, and MTTR specifications.
  • Provide technical leadership on medium-to-high-complexity reliability initiatives and guide teams through advanced reliability challenges.
  • Lead cross-functional reliability reviews and provide expert feedback on architecture, SLO design, and observability coverage.
  • Influence organizational SRE standards and promote reuse of reliability tooling and scalable automation.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level SREs and consult on SRE methods and procedures with guidance from senior leadership.
  • Promote an AI-first culture to reduce repetitive operational work and toil.
  • Apply enterprise security policies and standards to operational and reliability work.
  • Represent the SRE function in cross-functional forums and communicate reliability outcomes in terms of business impact.
  • Monitor emerging reliability, observability, and automation technologies and recommend adoption when it improves organizational outcomes.
