Lead Python Developer/AWS

CGIBloomfield, CT
Hybrid

About The Position

CGI is seeking an experienced Lead Python Developer with AWS to provide hands-on technical leadership for backend applications running on AWS (Lambda and EKS). The expectation is to also remain an active, engaged contributor to the codebase. This role sits alongside our existing tech leads (onshore and India based) as a peer — sharing ownership of technical decisions, reinforcing standards across the team, and adding senior engineering capacity. It is well suited to a technical leader who enjoys solving hard problems directly, setting strong engineering direction in their area, and helping the broader team — not just their own reports — deliver high-quality solutions. This person will interface directly with management to translate technical tradeoffs into business terms and will coordinate continuously with peer leads to keep architecture and standards aligned across teams/sites. This is a Full-Time, On-Site employment opportunity located in Bloomfield, CT (Preferred), Lafayette, LA, Raleigh, NC, Plano, TX, St. Louis, MO in a Hybrid Model.

Requirements

  • At least 10+ years of software development experience, including 2+ years as a technical lead, architect, or senior advisor on a Python backend team.
  • Demonstrated experience setting technical direction and standards for a team, including leading code reviews and design discussions.
  • Proven experience building and scaling REST APIs (FastAPI/Flask) in production environments.
  • Strong SQL skills at an architectural level: schema design, indexing strategy, and performance tuning across a system.
  • Hands on AWS experience with: Lambda, S3, SQS, DynamoDB EC2 and EKS (deployments, services, ingress, config/secrets, troubleshooting) Boto3, IAM, CloudWatch
  • Experience with CI/CD (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar) and container registries.
  • Comfortable communicating directly with stakeholders/leadership on technical matters — translating technical detail into risk, tradeoffs, and recommendations.
  • A collaborative, low ego working style — this is a peer capacity role alongside two existing tech leads. Success requires shared ownership and willingness to align with established direction.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Java (Spring Boot or similar).
  • Exposure to ReactJS for API integration and UI collaboration.
  • Experience with Terraform/CloudFormation and infrastructure as code.
  • Familiarity with OpenShift/Kubernetes outside AWS.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL/Aurora or enterprise RDBMS platforms.
  • Prior experience working in a multi lead or matrixed technical team structure (e.g., coordinating with peer leads across onshore/offshore sites).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and architectural direction for Python/AWS backend services, in collaboration with the existing tech leads as a shared owner of technical direction.
  • Lead and participate in code reviews; set and reinforce coding standards, patterns, and best practices across the team.
  • Coordinate work across team members, identify dependencies and blockers, and help the team stay aligned on priorities and delivery commitments.
  • Facilitate technical discussions and help the team reach timely decisions, working with peer leads to align on direction rather than deciding unilaterally.
  • Design, develop, and support cloud-based application components and services using AWS, with an emphasis on maintainability, reliability, security, and operational readiness.
  • Guide serverless and event driven architecture decisions using AWS Lambda, S3, SQS, and DynamoDB.
  • Hands on experience with EC2 and EKS (deployments, services, ingress, config/secrets, troubleshooting), Boto3, IAM, and CloudWatch.
  • Design, develop, and maintain Python applications using strong object-oriented design, reusable components, and clean coding practices.
  • Build and integrate RESTful APIs using FastAPI and/or Flask.
  • Guide code structure, design patterns, error handling, and testing approach across the team; review code and provide actionable feedback.
  • Apply deep SQL knowledge at an architectural level — schema design, indexing strategy, and system level performance tuning, not just query optimization.
  • Design, write, and review SQL used by applications for reliable, efficient data access.
  • Support troubleshooting of data related issues and help the team maintain consistent data access patterns.
  • Communicate confidently with developers, architects, QA, product, and management to coordinate technical activities and resolve issues.
  • Interface directly with management to communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations in business terms.
  • Mentor mid level and junior developers and share technical knowledge — without bottlenecking decisions through a single lead.
  • Proactively communicate technical risks, dependencies, blockers, and progress to the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with the other tech leads to keep architecture and standards aligned across teams/sites.
