About The Position

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) builds and operates large-scale cloud services for mission-critical enterprise workloads. The SPLAT team delivers foundational platform services for secure API routing, service registration, traffic management, distributed throttling, private connectivity, authentication, and safe-change enforcement. These services sit in the request path for more than 300 OCI control planes and process hundreds of billions of API requests each month. The Lead Principal Platform Software Engineer is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for leading architecture and delivery of critical platform systems and initiatives across teams. The role spans high-throughput Java services, distributed systems, networking, security, and production reliability. The engineer writes and reviews production code, guides architectural decisions, resolves complex operational problems, mentors engineers, and drives progress amid unclear requirements, ownership, or failure boundaries.

Responsibilities

  • Lead significant systems and initiatives from problem definition and design through implementation, rollout, adoption, and production validation.
  • Translate scalability, security, reliability, and business requirements into technical designs and execution plans.
  • Make tradeoffs involving availability, consistency, latency, throughput, durability, cost, and operational complexity.
  • Design systems to handle partial failures, retries, duplicate requests, mixed-version deployments, dependency degradation, and regional disruption.
  • Write and review secure, maintainable, well-tested Java code.
  • Define service contracts, compatibility requirements, migration plans, validation strategies, and rollback criteria.
  • Establish shared observability frameworks and rollout policies adopted by numerous teams, and manage deprecation risk.
  • Establish capacity models, performance objectives, scaling strategies, and load-testing plans for high-throughput services.
  • Design throttling, load shedding, backpressure, caching, concurrency, and failure-recovery mechanisms.
  • Define service-level indicators and objectives, actionable metrics and alarms, dashboards, runbooks, and deployment safeguards.
  • Lead complex incident investigations and convert recurring failures and manual processes into automation and preventive engineering improvements.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for issues spanning applications, infrastructure, networking, and organizational boundaries.
  • Provide architectural direction in routing, authentication, private connectivity, runtime performance, observability, and deployment infrastructure.
  • Break broad initiatives into independently ownable work while maintaining architectural consistency.
  • Mentor engineers through design, code review, delivery, and incident response.
  • Improve engineering quality through reusable systems, tools, standards, and operational practices.
  • Contribute to hiring and shape the team roadmap by identifying architectural investments, platform gaps, and reliability risks.
  • Align SPLAT and partner teams on technical decisions, ownership, dependencies, and rollout plans.
  • Communicate designs, tradeoffs, risks, and progress clearly to engineers and leaders.
  • Drive progress under ambiguity by distinguishing facts from assumptions, identifying reversible decisions, and clarifying external dependencies.
  • Adapt technical direction as production evidence and new information challenge prior assumptions.
  • Use modern development and AI-assisted tools responsibly to improve engineering quality and productivity.
