About The Position

C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Lead Operator for its Water and Sewer department. This position safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment while leading and supporting crew operations on underground utility projects. The role requires experience laying water mains, reading grades and blueprints, and working in varied environments, including city streets and uneven terrain, with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity. The Lead Operator performs excavation, trenching, earthmoving, compaction, and pipeline installation work, including installing and connecting PVC and ductile iron piping from 2 inches to 24 inches and larger as required. The position involves safely excavating around existing utilities, operating equipment around personnel and infrastructure, and communicating with crew members and supervisors about job progress and site conditions. Work takes place outdoors at active construction sites, in all weather conditions and varying terrain, and may involve travel, weekend or emergency work, overtime, and extended hours. The position is full-time, with typical work weeks of 40 to 60 hours depending on project demands.

Requirements

At least 3 years of experience as a Lead Operator laying water mains.
Experience digging in trench boxes.
Strong working knowledge of grades, blueprints, and underground utility construction.
Knowledge of underground utilities and locator markings.
Ability to safely operate heavy equipment around personnel and existing infrastructure.
Strong decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
Ability to lead and work effectively within a crew environment.
Strong communication skills and a dependable work ethic.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Must provide documentation verifying identity and employment eligibility in accordance with federal I-9 requirements.
Ability to pass pre-employment drug testing, MVR screening, and background check; MVR must meet company fleet vehicle policy requirements.
Willingness to travel and work in different areas as needed.
Commitment to following safety policies and procedures.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor.
Ability to work overtime and extended hours based on workload.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including lifting, bending, and climbing.
Ability to stand, walk, and operate heavy equipment for extended periods.
Ability to work in trench conditions and confined work areas.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Safely and efficiently operate excavators, dozers, skid steers, and other heavy machinery.
Perform excavation work in city street and rural environments while remaining aware of surroundings.
Read and interpret grades, blueprints, and job specifications.
Apply pipeline construction and maintenance techniques.
Perform trenching, earthmoving, and compaction according to project requirements.
Excavate cautiously around existing utilities and operate equipment safely around personnel and underground infrastructure.
Install and connect PVC and ductile iron piping ranging from 2 inches to 24 inches and larger as required.
Lead by example in productivity, safety, and quality standards on job sites.
Communicate job progress and site conditions to crew members and supervisors.
Work independently and as part of a crew to meet project goals.
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain, including uneven and muddy environments.
Travel to different areas as required by job location and workload.
Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor or management.
