About The Position

C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Lead Operator for its Water and Sewer department. This position safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment while leading and supporting crew operations on underground utility projects. The role requires experience laying water mains, reading grades and blueprints, and working in environments such as city streets and uneven terrain, with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity. The position is full-time, with typical work weeks ranging from 40 to 60 hours depending on project demands. Weekend and emergency work may be required, and travel depends on job location. Work takes place outdoors at construction sites in varying weather, including city streets, rural areas, and active construction zones. The job involves exposure to heavy equipment, traffic, noise, uneven terrain, trench conditions, and confined work areas. Compensation is $25.02–$35.10, based on experience. Requirements

At least 3 years of experience as a Lead Operator laying water mains.
Experience digging in trench boxes.
Must pass and maintain required operator qualifications and testing.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Provide documentation verifying identity and employment eligibility in accordance with federal I-9 requirements.
Pass pre-employment screenings, including a drug test, MVR, and background check.
Meet company fleet vehicle policy requirements for MVR.
Willingness to travel and work in different areas as needed.
Commitment to following safety policies and procedures.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor.
Ability to work overtime and extended hours based on workload.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including lifting, bending, and climbing.
Ability to stand and walk frequently and operate heavy equipment for extended periods.
Ability to work in trench conditions and confined work areas.
Strong working knowledge of grades, blueprints, and underground utility construction.
Knowledge of underground utilities and locator markings.
Ability to safely operate heavy equipment around personnel and existing infrastructure.
Strong decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
Ability to lead and work effectively within a crew environment.
Strong communication skills and dependable work ethic.

Nice To Haves

CDL license.

Responsibilities

Safely and efficiently operate excavators, dozers, skid steers, and other heavy machinery.
Perform excavation work in city street and rural environments while remaining aware of surroundings.
Read and interpret grades, blueprints, and job specifications.
Apply pipeline construction and maintenance techniques.
Perform trenching, earthmoving, and compaction work according to project requirements.
Excavate cautiously around existing utilities.
Install and connect PVC and ductile iron piping ranging from 2 inches to 24 inches and larger as required.
Lead by example in productivity, safety, and quality standards on job sites.
Communicate job progress and site conditions to crew members and supervisors.
Work independently and as part of a crew to meet project goals.
Operate equipment safely around personnel and underground utilities.
Work outdoors in all weather conditions and varying terrain, including uneven and muddy environments.
Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor or management.
