About The Position

National Grid is hiring a Lead NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) Specialist for their Capital Project Delivery group in Waltham, MA. This role provides technical expertise in non-destructive examination for natural gas transmission, distribution, and LNG assets to minimize the risk of component failure and ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. The position involves leadership and contractor oversight for NDE activities, improving regulatory compliance, reducing weld joint integrity risks, and ensuring clear accountability for NDE in record-keeping. The role is also responsible for planning, delivery, management, and governance of Gas Capital Projects to ensure they are cost-effective and robust.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • AWS CWI required.
  • Documented American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level 2 certification in at least three NDE methods (Preferred methods: Radiography Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Penetrant Testing (PT)) required.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years NDE in Power Generation or Gas Utility.
  • Experience managing a team with the ability to build effective, respectful, working relationships.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving history.
  • Must have the ability to work without the need for current or future visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Level 3 certification is preferred.
  • Time towards level 3 certification also considered.

Responsibilities

  • Perform contractor/vendor audits and surveillances, including radiographic film review.
  • Ensure NDE examinations comply with safety standards, policies, and processes.
  • Interpret codes, standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Establish, approve, and select appropriate NDE methods and techniques.
  • Evaluate test results for compliance with codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Provide training, examination, and certification of NDE personnel.
  • Perform NDE for methods they are certified in.
  • Audit contractors and outside agencies to ensure satisfaction with code and contractual requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage an NDE workforce (NDE Level II's & CWI's) on projects.
  • Provide guidance to a diverse workforce through coaching, counseling, and team building.
  • Build and manage day-to-day relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Promote and implement procedural best practices to ensure compliance with National Grid policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant regulations by providing up-to-date information on National Grid policies, processes, and programs to regulatory bodies.
  • Monitor and challenge business processes to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Serve on industry and professional organizations to promote technical advances and public understanding of NDE programs.
  • Keep regulators informed on National Grid compliance programs.
  • Provide off-hours coverage for gas field operations up to three times per year.
