Lead Mechanical / Plumbing Engineer – Construction Administration (CA)
About The Position
WSP is seeking a Lead Mechanical / Plumbing Engineer – Construction Administration (CA) to support the successful execution of building projects across a variety of market sectors, including commercial, healthcare, higher education, science & technology, and industrial facilities. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys being closely involved in the construction phase, partnering with contractors, owners, architects, and internal design teams to ensure mechanical and plumbing systems are installed in accordance with design intent, codes, and WSP quality standards. This person can be based out of our San Jose, Riverside, or Los Angeles, CA office locations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 7+ years of experience supporting building system projects, with a strong emphasis on construction administration.
- Hands‑on experience reviewing and interpreting construction documents, specifications, and submittal packages.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing systems including HVAC, hydronic systems, domestic water, sanitary, storm, specialty waste, and medical gas (where applicable).
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, IBC, IPC, local AHJs).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit; ability to navigate construction drawings efficiently.
Nice To Haves
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
- Experience supporting healthcare, higher education, or complex commercial projects.
- OSHPD experience preferred.
- Prior experience working directly with contractors during active construction.
- Familiarity with commissioning processes and construction close‑out activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide mechanical and plumbing construction administration support from construction commencement through project close‑out.
- Review and respond to RFIs, submittmits, shop drawings, and product data for mechanical and plumbing systems.
- Perform site visits, field observations, and punch walks to verify installation quality, constructability, and code compliance.
- Support issue resolution in collaboration with contractors, architects, and internal project teams.
- Review change orders and assist with field clarifications and constructability evaluations.
- Coordinate with internal mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and architectural teams to resolve field conflicts.
- Support commissioning, start‑up reviews, and close‑out documentation as required.
- Assist with QA/QC reviews to ensure alignment with WSP standards and contract documents.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with clients and project stakeholders during construction meetings and site interactions.
