About The Position

Cushing Terrell is seeking an experienced Plumbing and Mechanical Engineer to join our growing consulting team in Billings, Montana. This is a senior-level role within a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering firm, focused on the design and delivery of plumbing and HVAC systems for complex built environment projects. If you are a consulting engineer with deep expertise in plumbing systems design — domestic water, waste, vent, and mechanical HVAC and you want to design meaningful built environment projects, we want to hear from you.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in consulting plumbing and HVAC engineering within the built environment
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Montana, or the ability to obtain licensure — strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to design complex plumbing systems including domestic hot and cold water, sanitary waste, and vent systems to a high standard of quality
  • Proficiency in HVAC systems design including VAV, DOAS, VRF, data room cooling, packaged rooftop, chilled water cooling, and hydronic heating systems
  • Advanced knowledge of heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, hydronic pipe sizing, pump selection, duct sizing, and fan selection
  • Strong command of mechanical building codes and their application in commercial and institutional built environment projects
  • Advanced understanding of digital temperature control systems, control strategies, sequences of operation, and control drawings
  • Proficiency in writing mechanical specifications for consulting engineering projects
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with a team of engineers and drafters to produce high-quality construction documents
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deliver a high level of client service
  • Plumbing and mechanical engineering experience in a built environment consulting or A/E firm setting is the most important factor — not checking every box
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Cushing Terrell will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Responsibilities

  • Develop plumbing and mechanical HVAC design concepts independently or in collaboration with a multidisciplinary A/E team
  • Consult directly with clients to define project needs, goals, and budget parameters, and translate those into engineered systems solutions
  • Conduct site assessments and building evaluations to produce engineering reports and recommendations for improvement of existing plumbing and mechanical systems
  • Identify energy conservation opportunities, quantify potential savings, and estimate construction costs for recommended measures
  • Act as Engineer in Responsible Charge — making technical decisions, reviewing, stamping, and signing construction documents for plumbing and mechanical scopes
  • Provide quality control reviews of plumbing and mechanical designs across the team and deliver constructive, actionable feedback
  • Maintain proficiency in relevant software including Microsoft Office 365, Bluebeam, and HVAC/plumbing engineering design tools
  • Contribute to the growth of Cushing Terrell's integrated A/E consulting practice and the depth of expertise within our mechanical team

  • Competitive benefits package
  • Work opportunities in a variety of locations and markets
  • Company culture that celebrates all the unique viewpoints and personalities that make up our talented team
