Lead Mechanical Engineer 2 - Mission Critical

Sargent & Lundy•Los Alamos, NM
•$118,023 - $180,313•Hybrid

About The Position

This lead-level engineering position offers challenging opportunities in mechanical engineering and career advancement. The role leads mechanical design engineering efforts on multidisciplinary project teams, applying mechanical engineering expertise to the design and analysis of special-purpose equipment, pressure vessels, interfacing systems, controls, and structural support elements. The position has a hybrid arrangement, with a mix of work from home and in-office work. The engineer monitors assigned staff on technical matters, keeps assigned tasks within project schedules and budgets, prepares and reviews calculations, designs, specifications, reports, and studies, and provides documented design input for drawing production. The role also develops budgets, schedules, and work plans for single-discipline or simple-scope projects, interfaces with customers and vendors, and mentors junior engineers. The position is with Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division, which provides engineering design and consulting support to DOE sites, national laboratories, and related contractors. Work may support environmental cleanup, nuclear waste treatment, storage and disposal, or the safe handling and processing of nuclear material. Candidates must be U.S. citizens; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify, and the position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.

  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • BSME or MSME degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, with a strong academic background and interest in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, or thermal systems.
  • 12 or more years of progressive responsible experience in mechanical engineering, ideally in a nuclear environment.
  • Experience producing engineering designs and analyses for piping, pressure vessels, HVAC, and/or radioactive material handling systems.
  • Working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations applicable to mechanical engineering design, such as ASME B31 piping codes, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, and ASME AG-1.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis or advanced engineering software, such as ANSYS, AutoPIPE, Datacor/AFT flow simulation, Hourly Analysis Program, or Trace 700.
