Lead Mechanical Engineer 1 - Mission Critical
About The Position
This lead-level engineering position offers challenging opportunities in mechanical engineering and career advancement. The role leads mechanical design engineering efforts on multidisciplinary project teams, applying mechanical engineering expertise to the design and analysis of special-purpose equipment, pressure vessels, and interfacing systems, controls, and structural support elements. The position allows for a hybrid arrangement, with a mix of work from home and in the office. The engineer prepares and reviews calculations, mechanical systems and equipment designs, equipment specifications, and reports or studies. The role also prepares documented design input for drawing production, including P&IDs, machine layouts, and general arrangements; communicates with vendors through clear and complete specifications; develops budgets, schedules, and work plans for single-discipline, simple-scope projects; monitors work to ensure it stays within budget and schedule; interfaces directly with customers in project meetings; and mentors junior engineers.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
- Must be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
- BSME or MSME from an ABET-accredited engineering program, with a strong academic background and interest in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, or thermal systems.
- 10 or more years of progressive responsible experience in mechanical engineering, ideally in a nuclear environment.
- Experience producing engineering designs and analyses for piping, pressure vessels, HVAC, and/or radioactive material handling systems.
- Working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations applicable to mechanical engineering design, such as ASME B31 piping codes, the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, and ASME AG-1.
- Experience with finite element analysis or advanced engineering software, such as ANSYS, AutoPIPE, Datacor/AFT flow simulation, Hourly Analysis Program, or Trace 700.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Nice To Haves
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- DOE experience, commercial or Navy preferred.
- Field engineering and construction experience.
- Experience with CAD software such as Solidworks, Inventor, Microstation, or AutoCAD.
- Programming or scripting experience, such as Python, MATLAB, Mathcad, or advanced Excel.
- Experience with glovebox and hot cell design.
- Interest in learning and effectively using emerging technologies where relevant to the role; experience with AI, automation, programming, or similar technologies is valued but not required unless otherwise specified.
