About The Position

Performs assigned work relative to maintenance, repair, and inspection of motor vehicles for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Fleet Services Division. This role involves assisting the supervisor with work assignments, verifying time records, and aiding in the training of mechanics. The Lead Mechanic acts as a shift supervisor in the absence of the regular supervisor. Responsibilities include performing a variety of repairs to engines, air conditioning and heating systems, and electrical systems, as well as conducting state safety inspections and maintaining batteries. The position also entails performing scheduled preventative maintenance, changing tires, fueling, and cleaning vehicles. Road/service calls may be required, and operating DART vehicles may be necessary. The role also focuses on promoting established safety, training, and quality assurance programs. The position requires working irregular hours and being available to work on short notice.

Requirements

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university or two (2) year trade certification from an accredited technical program in Automotive/Diesel Technology or related field.
  • Must have four (4) years experience as an Automotive/Diesel mechanic.
  • Must pass a technical test.
  • Must have a valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) class A Restricted, no DWI/DUI conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty six (36) consecutive months on driving record in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  • Applicants/employees must pass and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (medical) examination including pre-employment drug test and must submit to Federal Transportation Administration-required random drug/alcohol testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • Operates DART multi-axle vehicles, trucks, and service equipment as required.
  • Ability to be mobile 70% - 80% of the work time.
  • Lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds such as tools, equipment and parts.
  • Must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces.
  • Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and with respect towards all level of supervisory, non-supervisory employees and others inside and out of DART, while on duty.
  • Ability to promote a positive and inclusive work culture.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Supervisor with work task assignments; verify daily time records; assist with training mechanics.
  • Acts as Shift supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Perform variety of repairs to engines, air conditioning and heating systems, and electrical systems.
  • Perform state safety inspections of vehicles.
  • Maintain batteries to include charging and inspecting for defects.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of vehicles as scheduled.
  • Change tires, fuels, and/or cleans vehicles as required.
  • Make road/service calls as required; operate DART vehicles if necessary.
  • Promote established safety, training, and quality assurance programs.
  • Works irregular hours and must be available to work on short notice when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
