About The Position

The Material Handler Lead will assist Supervisors and Management by providing leadership and training to assigned Material Handling and Donation Attendant personnel. The Lead performs and trains duties such as efficiently and safely loading and unloading trucks and trailers at the warehouse using pallet jacks and forklifts; accurately sorting, stocking, processing, or disposing of product or material; and helping to maintain the organization of the warehouse. This includes donated goods, recycled materials, salvage materials, garbage, and hazardous materials. The role also involves maintaining the cleanliness of the warehouse, both inside and outside, and assisting in other areas of the agency as needed to meet business demands. Adherence to Goodwill Industries rules, policies, and safety procedures is required.

Requirements

  • Up to one-month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Less than high school education or up to one-month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid Oregon or Alaska driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Become forklift certified through Goodwill training.
  • Maintain well-groomed appearance and acceptable dress in compliance with GILSCC’s dress guidelines.
  • Represent the company by providing exemplary customer service to customers and co-workers.
  • Reports for scheduled work regularly and on time.
  • Notifies manager as soon as possible regarding the need and expected duration of any absence.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, CARF standards and safety and security regulations.
  • Must be able to follow written or verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to read and write.
  • Must be able to function independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • No record or disclosure of criminal conviction that indicates a tendency toward theft, violence, dishonesty, deceit, drug manufacture or sale, moral turpitude, or predatory behavior.
  • Must provide identification and eligibility to work in the United States of America.
  • Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug-screening test, and subsequent drug screenings, as required.
  • Must exercise good judgment.
  • Be flexible in work assignment to accommodate changing production demands.
  • Must have sufficient command of the English language to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers and supervisors.

  • Must be able to perform essential functions of the Material Handler/Baler’s job description task analysis with or without accommodation.
  • Notify immediate supervisor of any problems or unusual situations including accidents, driving citations, suspended driver license, etc.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must be able to do heavy lifting, stand, walk, carry, push, stoop, bend, twist, crouch, grasp, kneel and climb.
  • DOT Strength classification: Heavy.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Warehouse Supervisor or Store Manager with training of Material Handlers and Donation Attendants within the donation processing area.
  • Efficiently and safely load and unload trucks and trailers at the warehouses using pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Complete cleaning tasks as assigned; help maintain the warehouses as safe, clean workplaces.
  • Accurately sorts salvage materials into assigned containers.
  • Safely and correctly operate the cardboard and trash compactors.
  • Safely and correctly operate the textile baler.
  • Practice highest-quality customer service including respectful treatment of all customers and staff.
  • Offer helpful, innovative suggestions to help improve processes within the department.
  • Uses correct lifting and material handling techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with all state safety guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with all GILSCC’s policies, CARF standards, and safety and security regulations.
  • Keep supervisor informed of problems and suggestions related to the job.
  • Prepare records and reports, as requested.
  • Informs supervisor of operation needs such as moving equipment, material handling dollies, pads, flats and trucks, including any maintenance needs and repairs.
  • Perform other related duties as required and be a team player.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
