Lead Manufacturing Engineer – Robotics

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA
•Onsite

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence develops and deploys AI-powered robots that automate real-world operations and is scaling manufacturing across multiple robot platforms. The Lead Manufacturing Engineer will provide technical leadership for Manufacturing Engineering, Test Engineering, Quality, and NPI across those platforms. This is a hands-on technical leadership role rather than a people-management position: the engineer will set technical direction, solve complex problems, and guide engineers across disciplines. Success is measured by manufacturing reliability, quality, efficiency, and scalability. The role owns technical escalation and problem solving for complex manufacturing, electrical, mechanical, and test issues; manufacturing process development, validation, tooling, fixtures, and work instructions; test strategy, automation, and infrastructure; quality and reliability practices; NPI and engineering-change implementation; and the manufacturing systems and infrastructure needed to scale. The engineer will collaborate with Production, R&D, and Fleet Reliability to prevent recurring defects and transfer new products into stable, repeatable production.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Deep hands-on experience building and debugging complex electromechanical systems.
  • Proven technical leadership across mechanical, electrical, systems integration, and test.
  • Experience building manufacturing processes, tooling, automated test systems, and validation methods.
  • Track record of improving quality, first-pass yield, reliability, and throughput.
  • Experience taking hardware from development into scalable production.
  • Sound engineering judgment and structured problem-solving under pressure.
  • Ability to mentor and lead engineers without direct authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in robotics, industrial automation, or similarly complex hardware.
  • Test software, Python, SQL, or test automation experience.
  • MES/PLM implementation and engineering change control experience.
  • Experience scaling manufacturing at a startup or fast-growing hardware company.
  • Experience using AI and automation to improve engineering workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex manufacturing, electrical, mechanical, and test issues.
  • Work hands-on with engineers to diagnose failures and implement permanent fixes.
  • Set technical standards and promote disciplined execution.
  • Develop and validate manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, and work instructions.
  • Clear production blockers and eliminate recurring defects.
  • Improve first-pass yield, cycle time, labor efficiency, throughput, and cost.
  • Define test strategy, automation, and infrastructure from component testing and robot bring-up through end-of-line testing and FAT.
  • Establish reliable test systems with clear acceptance criteria and traceable results, catching defects before bring-up, final test, or customer deployment.
  • Implement process controls and error-proofing, and lead root-cause corrective action, failure investigations, and nonconforming-material dispositions.
  • Partner with Production, R&D, and Fleet Reliability to prevent repeat defects.
  • Drive design for manufacturability, assembly, test, and serviceability with R&D.
  • Own release readiness, engineering-change implementation, and controlled production cut-ins.
  • Transfer new products into stable, repeatable production.
  • Manage manufacturing configuration, process control, and product genealogy in MES/PLM systems, including ION and Atlas.
  • Use data, automation, and AI to improve engineering productivity.
  • Build processes, test capability, and infrastructure to support rising manufacturing volume.
  • Mentor and guide engineers without direct authority.
