About The Position

The Lead Machine Operator plays a critical role in the efficient production and packaging of soil, mulch, and related products within our bagging facility. This position reports directly to the Foreman and serves as the lead operator responsible for ensuring machinery operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with quality standards. While not a formal supervisory role, the Lead Machine Operator may provide direction, training, and support to other operators and production team members as assigned. Success in the first 12 months includes maintaining production efficiency, minimizing equipment downtime, ensuring quality standards are met, promoting safe work practices, and serving as a reliable resource for the production team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating automated machinery in a manufacturing, production, packaging, or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot equipment and perform minor repairs.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and safe equipment operating procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret production schedules, operating instructions, and technical manuals.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to safely operate machinery and material handling equipment.
  • Willingness to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and dust masks.
  • Ability to work in dusty environments and around moving mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, and changing weather.
  • Ability to work around airborne particles, noise, vibration, and industrial equipment.
  • Commitment to following all safety standards, procedures, and protocols.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical or vocational training in manufacturing, mechanics, industrial technology, or a related field.

  • Forklift certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and adjust automated bagging equipment to ensure efficient production and packaging operations.
  • Set up and calibrate machinery to meet production specifications and product quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot machine malfunctions and perform minor repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel to resolve major equipment issues.
  • Lead daily machine operations and provide guidance to operators during assigned shifts or projects.
  • Train and assist new team members on equipment operation, safety procedures, and production processes.
  • Inspect packaged products to ensure proper weight, sealing, labeling, and overall quality.
  • Maintain accurate production records, machine logs, and daily operational reports.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections, cleaning, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Promote a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the bagging facility.
