About The Position

D&G Landscaping is seeking a reliable and experienced Lead Hand / Equipment Operator to support our softscape and hardscape crews on active commercial construction projects. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on construction and landscaping experience, is confident operating a variety of heavy equipment, and can lead by example while helping maintain a safe, productive, and organized job site. As the primary equipment operator on site, this individual will be responsible for operating a skid steer, backhoe, mini excavator, tractor, and other equipment as required, while also performing skilled labourer duties and assisting with crew coordination and daily site activities.

Requirements

  • Previous experience operating skid steers, mini excavators, backhoes, tractors, or similar equipment
  • Experience in commercial landscaping, construction, earthworks, or site development
  • Ability to read grades, elevations, and site layouts using common construction layout tools
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to work independently and assist in directing crew activities
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality workmanship
  • Reliable transportation and strong attendance record
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn, grow, and contribute to team success

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently, including skid steers, mini excavators, backhoes, tractors, and other equipment as required
  • Lead by example and assist with coordinating daily work activities alongside the Site Supervisor or Foreman
  • Perform duties such as raking, shoveling, brooming, and moving materials (e.g., aggregates)
  • Assist with site layout using measuring tapes, string lines, laser levels, and grade rods
  • Use levels, squares, and layout tools to ensure accurate alignment and elevations
  • Safely operate hand and power tools, including quick cuts, hammers, chisels, mallets, grinders, and other construction tools
  • Complete excavation, grading, material handling, and site preparation activities using equipment
  • Install sod and topsoil, ensuring proper grading and finishing
  • Build and maintain garden beds, including soil preparation, planting flowers, shrubs, and perennials
  • Install mulch, erosion control blankets, and other landscape materials
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work environment while mentoring less experienced crew members
