About The Position

Alamon, Inc. seeks a Lead Fiber Characterization Technician for its Network Services department. This position entails testing fiber spans between customer sites under the guidance of the field supervisor. The Lead Fiber Characterization Technician will be responsible for cleaning and inspecting fiber as well as splicing on new connectors if needed. The technician will need to identify out-of-spec splice points and re-splice them should a customer ask. The Lead Fiber Characterization Technician will provide the supervisor with timely updates and relay any information. This position requires extensive travel.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to travel (95% travel required).
  • Experience with OTDR and Fusion Splice Machine.
  • Self-motivated.
  • High-quality workmanship oriented.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to drive a company vehicle.
  • Must pass the pre-employment screening process (background check, drug test, motor vehicle records pull).
  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license and a clean driving record with no DUI / DWIs within the past 5 years.
  • Willing to travel locally, statewide, or regionally as required.
  • Be available to work nights and weekends as required by project demands.
  • Extensive understanding of hand tools and test equipment.
  • Ability to use a computer to interface with customer products.
  • Communicate effectively, including proficiency in written and verbal communications, with strong listening skills.
  • Possess excellent time-management skills and multitasking abilities.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office computer applications: Email, Excel, Word, OneDrive.

  • Highschool Diploma or GED preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Run Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) tests.
  • Run Chromatic Dispersion (CD) tests.
  • Run Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) tests.
  • Run Optical Return and Power Loss (using OLTS) tests.
  • Maintain tools assigned to the job and monitor tool calibration requirements.
  • Identify out-of-spec splice points and jumpers.
  • Work with customers to fix and re-splice as requested.
  • Splice new connectors onto old fiber connectors.
  • Scope and clean fibers to ensure they are clean.
  • Run fiber jumpers between panels.
  • Keep accurate detailed notes.
  • Document Fiber Panels.
  • Meet or exceed customer and internal documented acceptable levels of quality.
  • Work with supervisor for scheduling and updates.
  • Self-supervise all operations to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with customer and industry specifications.
  • Field train and control/oversee the work of other technicians when necessary.
  • Complete daily production reports and keep track of work hours.
  • Work independently.
  • Perform basic daily maintenance of provided vehicle (check and clean).
  • Perform other splicing related duties as assigned.
  • Assist other departments as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
