About The Position

Kent is looking for a Fiber Optic Technician to join our Telecommunications team supporting industrial construction and maintenance activities at the Kearl project. The successful candidate will be responsible for installing, terminating, splicing, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining fiber optic communication systems while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. Working within a multidisciplinary project environment, the Fiber Optic Technician will support the delivery of telecommunications infrastructure in accordance with project specifications, client requirements, and industry best practices. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement while supporting project objectives on a rotational camp-based assignment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years' experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic communication systems in industrial, mining, construction, or oil and gas environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with fiber optic splicing, termination, testing, and commissioning.
  • Proficient in the operation of fusion splicers, OTDRs, optical power meters, and other fiber optic testing equipment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret telecommunications drawings, schematics, cable schedules, and technical specifications.
  • Working knowledge of structured cabling systems and telecommunications installation standards.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Ability to work in remote industrial environments on a rotational camp schedule.
  • Physically capable of performing work in varying weather conditions, climbing ladders, lifting materials, and working at heights when required.
  • CSTS 2020 or equivalent safety orientation is required.
  • Excellent command of the English language in both oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and professionally with supervisors, clients, and coworkers.

Nice To Haves

  • H2S Alive, Standard First Aid/CPR, Fall Protection, Elevated Work Platform, and other industrial safety certifications are considered assets.
  • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) certification or equivalent is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Install, route, terminate, splice, and test fiber optic cable systems in accordance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Perform fusion splicing, connector termination, and fiber optic restoration activities.
  • Install telecommunications equipment including patch panels, cabinets, enclosures, and associated infrastructure.
  • Conduct fiber optic testing using OTDRs, optical power meters, light sources, and fiber certification equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain fiber optic communication networks and related equipment.
  • Read and interpret telecommunications drawings, schematics, cable schedules, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Verify installations meet quality standards, client requirements, and applicable codes and specifications.
  • Complete testing documentation, commissioning reports, quality records, and turnover documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain testing equipment, tools, and company assets in safe working condition.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with supervisors, project management, engineers, electricians, and other trades to support project execution.
  • Participate in daily toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, safety observations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe work environment while adhering to Kent's Health, Safety, Sustainability, Environment, and Quality (HSSEQ) policies and all client site requirements.
  • Support commissioning, maintenance, shutdown, and troubleshooting activities as required.
  • Perform other ad-hoc tasks as needed or directed by the supervisor or management.

Benefits

  • Flights will be provided from the Edmonton or Calgary aerodrome on a 14-days-on/14-days-off rotation.
