About The Position

The Lead Facilities Maintenance Technician plays a critical, hands-on role in supporting St. Mary’s Center’s mission by ensuring that facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming for seniors, staff, and community members. This position serves as a senior technical resource within the facilities team, combining skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work including, but not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, interior and exterior painting, basic electrical, tile repair, appliance repair, and grounds maintenance. Most work is performed independently and requires the ability to problem-solve, and coordinate with vendors and fellow maintenance staff. The Lead Facilities Maintenance Technician helps prioritize work, and supports smooth coordination of facilities activities across administrative, housing, and program-use properties. The ideal candidate is dependable, resourceful, community-minded, and comfortable working independently while collaborating closely with others.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and ability to meet organizational vehicle insurance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilities maintenance, construction, or handyman work, with hands-on knowledge of carpentry, drywall, painting, plumbing, electrical, and general building systems.
  • Ability to independently perform a wide range of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, work orders, and basic plans.
  • Basic computer skills and experience using work order, help desk, or maintenance management systems.
  • Strong problem-solving, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to working respectfully within diverse, community-centered environments.

  • Experience coordinating vendors or contractors strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair work including carpentry, drywall, painting, flooring, light plumbing, light electrical, roofing, concrete, asphalt, and general building systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to reduce safety risks and service disruptions.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC-related, and fixture issues at St. Mary’s Center properties.
  • Replace HVAC filters and perform minor maintenance to support proper system operation.
  • Clean, maintain, and repair building fixtures and equipment such as doors, locks, windows, shelving, blinds, lighting, and furniture.
  • Respond to maintenance service requests and facility emergencies, including after-hours incidents when required.
  • Create, track, and close work orders using the facilities help-desk system.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, inventory, and completed work.
  • Help prioritize service requests in collaboration with the Facilities & Operations Manager and program staff.
  • Prepare basic documentation, timelines, and cost estimates related to maintenance and repair work.
  • Coordinate with and support outside vendors and contractors providing services such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, and landscaping.
  • Conduct field check-ins and basic inspections of contractor work; flag concerns or issues to management.
  • Serve as a point of contact for facilities-related requests in coordination with the facilities and operations manager.
  • Follow all safety, health, and operational policies and procedures.
  • Proactively identify and address potential safety hazards; clean up unsafe conditions and help secure facilities.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, tools, equipment, and maintenance spaces.
  • Interact respectfully and professionally with Seniors, Transitional Housing participants, staff, volunteers, community members, and partners.
  • Support fleet and facilities logistics as needed, including operating vehicles and moving materials.
  • Promote a positive, supportive, and mission-aligned environment through reliable and responsive Facilities support.
  • Respond to urgent facility issues outside of standard business hours as assigned.
  • Support emergency response related to facilities issues such as water leaks, power outages, security concerns, or alarm activations.
