About The Position

This role serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for motors, providing crucial technical support for operations, maintenance, and project activities across multiple geographic regions. The Lead Engineering Technologist manages work in their area of specialization with minimal supervision, developing advanced skills and the ability to work independently. They are expected to identify problems, develop solutions, and take action to resolve them. As the top technical authority, this role provides oversight and guidance to station and regional engineers and technologists in all aspects of motor operations and maintenance. Key activities include developing and reviewing specifications for new equipment, analyzing test results, supporting troubleshooting, and assessing reliability strategies for motor assets. The SME also produces technical documentation (standards, guidelines, procedures) and engages with external service providers to ensure Duke Energy standards are applied to repair and replacement activities.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Engineering Technology along with 8 years of related work experience OR High School Diploma / GED and 10 years of related work experience.
  • Proficient in practices of researching design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Either 6+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or 8+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or 10+ years equivalent experience without a degree.

  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Demonstrates skills applying leadership in the areas of technical project management, program oversight and/or governance.
  • Experience with motors: Analysis of on-line and off-line electrical test results (e.g. insulation resistance, motor current signature analysis).
  • Review of repair plans and activities.
  • Knowledge of motor design and construction.

  • Develops and assesses reliability strategies for motor assets across all RRE regions.
  • Produces technical documentation (standards, guidelines, procedures) in support of design, operations, and maintenance of RRE's motor assets.
  • Engages with external service providers to provide guidance on repair and replacement activities, ensuring that Duke Energy standards are consistently applied.
