About The Position

The Lead Engineer is responsible for the development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance, and operation of the system and its equipment to meet the mission and objectives of the organization. This position coordinates the evaluation of system failures and appropriate resolutions to support operations on unplanned maintenance. The role ensures that Eversource distribution systems are designed to high-quality standards, providing customers with safe, reliable, competitively priced, and environmentally sound electric service. This position shares accountability with peers in the strategy, development, and design of the organization’s Life Cycle Plan, a comprehensive long-term plan for the distribution system. The Lead Engineer is responsible for supervising, assigning, prioritizing, and directing the work performed by other Engineers and staff. Distribution Engineering focuses on the strategic development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance, and operation of the system and its equipment to provide reliable service to customers. Technical solutions and modernization initiatives are improving operations and enabling the integration of renewable energy resources. The group also works to prevent, evaluate, and provide appropriate resolutions to system failures. The Lead Engineer supervises represented engineers, manages needed increases in capacity, develops capital plan projects, improves system reliability, and plays a lead role in ERP response. This position has shared responsibility for optimizing the cost and performance of the transmission/distribution system assets. Depending on the specific assignment, this position could be situated in various service centers, accountable for specific asset systems (circuits, feeders, substations etc.) or centralized with accountability for component assets (cable, relays, transmission lines, breakers etc.). This position may require on-call responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of eight (8) years in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising, assigning, prioritizing, and directing the work performed by other Engineers and staff.
  • Coordinating the evaluation of system failures and appropriate resolutions.
  • Ensuring distribution systems are designed to high-quality standards.
  • Sharing accountability with peers in the strategy, development, and design of the organization’s Life Cycle Plan.
  • Managing needed increases in capacity.
  • Developing capital plan projects.
  • Improving system reliability.
  • Having a lead role in ERP response.
  • Optimizing the cost and performance of the transmission/distribution system assets.
  • Developing infrastructure strategy, operating philosophy, and technical basis for asset renewal decisions.
  • Working closely with System Planning on process integration (Bulk Power Substations).
  • Being responsible for the cost and performance of certain assets on the system including reliability analysis and trending of system events and monitoring of equipment condition.
  • Developing, justifying, and authorizing Life Cycle Plan activities over a multi-year horizon and for ongoing management.
  • Developing and managing a preventive maintenance optimization program.
  • Developing preliminary engineering designs and the details, as necessary.
  • Coordinating and prioritizing Life Cycle Plan work within each service area and across Electric Operations and participating in the work scheduling process.
  • Collaborating with other Engineers within Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork.
  • Providing technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines, and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.
  • Accountable for root-cause analysis, development, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Working closely with Investment Planning on project justification and financial rationing.
  • Evaluating and selecting technology and equipment for the system.
  • Developing standards and procedures for design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Assuming the role of Project Manager, as required.
  • Managing, coaching, developing, and reviewing performance of engineers and other staff.
