About The Position

The Lead Corrections Officer is responsible for maintaining order, security, and safety within correctional facilities and detention centers. This role involves overseeing and supervising individuals who have been arrested, are awaiting trial, or have been sentenced to incarceration. The position also includes supervising the safe and secure transport of inmates to detention facilities. Key duties include enforcing rules, preventing disturbances and escapes, and ensuring the well-being of both inmates and staff. The Lead Corrections Officer enforces the rules and regulations of the correctional facility, ensuring inmates adhere to codes of conduct and disciplinary measures.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of specialized experience providing direct supervision and care to criminal offenders and providing guidance to lower level correctional officers in the operation of a correctional and/or detention facility
  • One (1) year specialized experience enforcing rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct
  • One year (1) of specialized experience exercising sound judgment in making instantaneous decisions affecting life, well-being, civil liberties and property
  • Experience may have been gained in work such as serving as a lead as a police officer, mental health counselor in a residential facility; or detention officer
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet driver’s eligibility requirements
  • Must not have felony or serious misdemeanor convictions or arrests on record
  • No DUI convictions within the last 5 years
  • No domestic violence convictions and/or history of domestic or family violence arrests and/or protection orders
  • Must be of good moral and ethical character with the highest professionalism
  • Must have basic knowledge of radio procedures and the ability to operate radio equipment
  • Must acquire and retain first-aid and CPR certification as well as operational knowledge of first-aid equipment
  • Must be proficient in a variety of computer software programs and have basic operating knowledge of a variety of computers and office equipment
  • Must have the ability to effectively handle situations and people with tact, courtesy, respect and objectivity and to recurrently employ moral and ethical judgements
  • Must possess knowledge of corrections methods, procedures and techniques employed in corrections and pertaining to unarmed defense tactics, detention operations, inmate management, and crowd control
  • Must have working knowledge of most recent applicable local, Tribal, State and Federal laws and ordinances; jurisdictional laws; and rules and relationships of the tribe with local, State and Federal jurisdictions
  • Must possess basic knowledge of the Constitutional protection afforded to individuals to include rules concerning search and seizure and questioning and arrests
  • Must have thorough operating knowledge of the difference between criminal and civil infractions
  • Must have basic knowledge of, and certification in, intermediate weapons while performing corrections duties
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality, at all times, due to major access to sensitive information
  • Must possess the ability to pass a federal background check and pre-employment drug screen and will be subject to random drug screening throughout tenure
  • Must be physically fit for duty
  • Normal work to very heavy work (ability to lift over 50 lbs.)
  • The applicant is regularly required to (without aid) talk, hear, smell, and taste
  • The applicant is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time and use of both hands (and feet) to operate keyboard, phone, various office equipment, firearms, and vehicles
  • Manual dexterity with cooperatively free range of motion of all extremities including neck, finger, hand, wrist, elbow, arm, shoulder, waist, legs, hip, knee joints, ankle, and feet is required
  • The applicant will frequently be subject to physical exertion involving standing, walking, and running which requires sustained and considerable strength and endurance

Responsibilities

  • Directing corrections standards and guidelines
  • Dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed and/or to incidents involving inmate behavior
  • Supervising inmate movement and maintaining discipline within a correctional facility and/or on the facility grounds
  • Supervising or conducting searches within the facility, cells and on inmates
  • Supervising the security of a correctional facility and the safety of staff and inmates
  • Determining classification levels of inmates
  • Leading three or more correctional officers in a team approach to accomplish operational tasks related to correction/detention policy procedures
  • Supervising inmate movement and maintains discipline within the facility, on the grounds, and during recreational activities
  • Providing inmate supervision during transports to courts, medical appointments and to other facilities and coordinates and supervises inmate services, activities and programs
  • Supervising or conducting searches and seizes contraband within the facility, in cells, on inmates and prevents the introduction of contraband into the facilities
  • Maintaining the security of the facility as well as the custody, safety and humane treatment of inmates
  • Supervising the enforcement of standard rules and regulations governing the operations of the detention operations and programs, confinement, safety, health, and protection of criminal offenders
  • Providing preliminary interviews for physical and mental health with classification assessments
  • Supervising the management of inmate behavior of offenders in need of supervision
  • Supervising all safety aspects of facility emergency management plans to include fire and emergency evacuations
  • Exhibiting high moral standards at all times and uses good judgment and discretion
  • Performing other tasks as specified by Chief of Police
