Next Step is the social enterprise arm of Mel Trotter Ministries. Its construction division performs residential and light commercial work for paying customers, and all profits fund workforce development for people rebuilding their lives after homelessness. Many crew members are trainees learning the trade. The organization’s approach emphasizes compassion, consistency, accountability, immediate needs, and long-term stability. The Lead Carpenter owns job sites from start to finish, turning plans into completed spaces while helping others develop their skills. The role is responsible for customer-ready craftsmanship, keeping work on schedule, and maintaining high standards for safety and quality. The work is based in Grand Rapids and is primarily hands-on at job sites, building alongside the crew while coordinating schedules, materials, customers, inspectors, and subcontractors. The Lead Carpenter also teaches trainees through demonstrations and feedback, and leaves each site clean and ready for a walkthrough.
