About The Position

Next Step is the social enterprise arm of Mel Trotter Ministries. Its construction division completes residential and light commercial projects for paying customers, with profits funding workforce development for people rebuilding their lives after homelessness. Many crew members are trainees learning the trade. The Lead Carpenter owns job sites from start to finish, turning plans into finished spaces while helping others grow in the trade. The role focuses on customer-ready craftsmanship, keeping work on schedule, and maintaining high standards for safety and quality. The position is based in Grand Rapids and involves working hands-on alongside the crew, coordinating project activities, communicating with customers and other on-site partners, and coaching trainees.

Requirements

At least 5 years of hands-on carpentry experience.
At least 2 years of experience leading a crew or job site.
Strong blueprint-reading, layout, and math skills.
Familiarity with Michigan codes.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Basic hand tools.
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.

Responsibilities

Direct daily site work from layout through punch list, set priorities, and drive production.
Perform and oversee framing and finish work, including trim, doors and windows, decks, siding, and remodels.
Read plans and scopes, resolve field issues early, and coordinate materials, subcontractors, inspections, and on-site customer communication.
Maintain safety standards, perform quality checks, document work, and care for tools and vehicles.
Coach trainees and provide clear, respectful feedback.
Monitor schedules and confirm materials arrive as expected.
Leave the site clean and ready for walkthroughs, and provide clear notes for the next workday.
