E Source
•$91,000 - $123,000•Remote

About The Position

E Source is a research, data and analytics, and technology-focused professional services firm serving the utility industry in the United States and Canada. The Lead Analyst for the Technology Assessment Service (TAS) is a client-facing subject-matter expert on energy-efficiency, electrification, distributed energy resource (DER), and demand-flexibility technologies. The role evaluates deemed savings, cost-effectiveness for utility demand-side management (DSM) and DER programs, and ways utilities can incorporate technologies into future prescriptive or custom programs. The Lead Analyst draws on knowledge of building systems, technical reference manuals (TRMs), and utility programs to create client presentations and written deliverables that translate technical research into clear, actionable guidance. The role leads research and project delivery, responds to client inquiries, engages with utility clients, contributes to TAS strategy and business development, and mentors junior analysts. It also represents E Source at industry events. The position is remote, with occasional travel for industry events and utility member meetings. A cover letter is required because the role involves extensive written communication.

Requirements

  • Typically, an advanced degree and four or more years of relevant professional experience in energy-efficiency technology research, engineering, utility program design, or a closely related field; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree with commensurate professional experience.
  • Strong written communication skills; a cover letter is required with the application.
  • Demonstrated depth in several customer-sited technology areas, particularly building systems such as HVAC, heat pumps, water heating, building envelopes, controls, refrigeration, and motors across residential, commercial, and large C&I end uses, plus familiarity with electrification, renewables, and demand-response systems.
  • Working knowledge of how utility programs estimate savings and demand impacts, including baselines, measure definitions, deemed savings, TRMs, prescriptive and custom program approaches, field evaluations, cost-effectiveness inputs, and limitations of available performance data.
  • Strong ability to conduct interviews, read dense technical documents, and communicate complex material clearly and actionably.
  • Exceptional writing, verbal, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to present and engage verbally with clients on technical topics.
  • Ability to work across disciplines, seek feedback and support, prioritize planned research and unplanned client needs, take initiative, and follow through on commitments.
  • Curiosity, humility, creativity, and openness to sharing ideas for improving how work is done.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States or Canada; E Source is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas or Canadian Labour Market Impact Assessments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with electric or gas utility DSM or DER programs.
  • Experience working with or around utilities, regulators, manufacturers, research organizations, or consultants in the energy industry.
  • Experience presenting at industry conferences or publishing technical content.
  • A proven ability to operate as a subject-matter expert and thought leader in client-facing environments.
  • Experience mentoring or coaching junior staff.
  • Relevant study in engineering, building science, environmental science, energy policy, or a related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the in-house expert on customer-sited energy technologies and building systems, including HVAC, heat pumps, water heating, building controls, large commercial and industrial systems, electrification, solar, batteries, and demand-response-enabled equipment, and their use in utility DSM and DER programs.
  • Lead development of TAS research, including technology assessments, reports, technical briefs, and thought leadership content; manage research projects with senior-staff oversight and support, setting expectations, tracking timelines, and raising issues and dependencies early.
  • Serve as a primary subject-matter expert for Ask E inquiries on efficiency, electrification, and DER technologies by scoping requests, setting client expectations, and applying rapid technical judgment.
  • Gather and critically evaluate primary and secondary research, including interviews and technical literature; validate sources, assess evidence, and synthesize findings for audiences with varying levels of technical knowledge.
  • Create data-driven, action-oriented content for reports, articles, technical briefs, webinars, and in-person events.
  • Coordinate technical deliverables and presentation development across research, market research, and data production teams; direct Associate Analysts and Analysts and ensure work meets quality standards.
  • Lead research quality assurance and contribute to improvements in research workflows, data quality, and consistency of client deliverables.
  • Engage with utility clients through advisory calls, workshops, customized briefings, and occasional on-site meetings.
  • Partner with the TAS Product Manager to provide technical input on TAS strategy, research priorities, and the content roadmap.
  • Support business development by contributing to proposals, identifying client needs, and highlighting emerging technology trends.
  • Mentor and coach junior analysts on research quality, client delivery, and subject-matter expertise.
  • Lead sessions at the E Source Forum and represent E Source as a subject-matter expert at industry conferences and events.
