About The Position

The Law Library Officer is responsible for maintaining, organizing, and cataloging the law library collection, which includes books, legal materials, serials, and audiovisual resources. This role involves assisting inmates/detainees in accessing and utilizing legal and educational materials, while also supervising them to ensure safety and adherence to facility rules. The officer must enforce library policies and procedures, coordinate library programs, and select appropriate materials. Additionally, the position requires acquiring and maintaining library resources, providing guidance on materials, and offering assistive resources for inmates with disabilities. Maintaining accountability for inmates and property is also a key function.

  • Working knowledge of correctional policies and procedures, with the ability to follow and enforce them.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of six (6) months related experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, organize, and catalog the law library collection, including books, legal materials, serials, and audiovisual resources.
  • Assist inmates/detainees in locating, requesting, and using legal and educational materials.
  • Supervise inmates/detainees during library access to ensure safety, security, and compliance with facility rules.
  • Enforce library policies, procedures, and schedules in accordance with facility guidelines.
  • Coordinate and support library programs and services.
  • Evaluate requests and select appropriate materials based on legal needs and individual considerations.
  • Acquire and maintain relevant library resources to ensure accessibility and availability.
  • Provide general guidance on library materials and resources.
  • Provide assistive resources for disabled or bedridden inmates and promote appropriate behavior through supervision and intervention.
  • Maintain accountability of inmates/detainees and library property.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
