About The Position

This is an unpaid, full academic year clerkship with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid's (MMLA) Housing Unit, located in Minneapolis, MN. It is a hybrid position, with most work done remotely using MMLA-issued equipment. Some in-person work will occur at the downtown Minneapolis office and potentially at community partner locations. MMLA offers comprehensive training and meaningful learning opportunities to develop legal skills. The organization is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace, with a particular focus on advancing racial justice due to the disproportionate impact of racism on clients and staff.

Requirements

  • 1L, 2L, and 3L law students are encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles.
  • Work, volunteer, or lived experience with diverse economic, social, rural, and/or cultural communities.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in the legal subject area of the MMLA unit to which the clerk is applying.
  • Interest in court appearances and advocacy on behalf of client rights.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest work.
  • Fluency in additional language(s) is highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Complete onboarding and required training.
  • Assist with client intake and case management.
  • Manage a small caseload of assigned matters.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Draft legal pleadings and related documents.
  • Assist with unit-specific projects.
  • Participate in litigation support activities when appropriate cases are available.
