About The Position

3-Dimensional Services Group is a precision manufacturing company with facilities in Lapeer and Rochester Hills, Michigan, providing engineering, fabrication, machining, laser processing, and welding services. The Laser Weld Programmer programs and sets up TRUMPF laser welding systems, develops weld parameters for a range of metals, and proves out new jobs to achieve parts that meet print and specification requirements. The role collaborates with engineering, the toolroom, operators, and Quality; supports reliable production and documentation; and follows laser and robot-cell safety procedures.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience programming industrial robots for welding.
  • Hands-on experience programming and setting up laser welding systems.
  • Solid understanding of laser weld fundamentals, including penetration, heat input, joint design, focus position, and common defects such as porosity, cracking, undercut, and lack of fusion.
  • Ability to read blueprints, weld symbols, and GD&T.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and software issues.
  • Comfort using measuring tools and working with quality documentation.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Nice To Haves

  • KUKA (KRL) experience is strongly preferred.
  • TRUMPF laser welding system experience is preferred.
  • A technical degree or certificate is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Program and set up TRUMPF laser welding systems, including path, focus, power, speed, wobble, and shielding gas settings.
  • Develop and document weld parameters for steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other alloys, and dial in settings for new parts and materials.
  • Prove out new jobs through first-article welds, cycle-time optimization, and adjustments until parts meet print and specification requirements.
  • Work with engineering and the toolroom on fixture design and part fit-up to achieve consistent weld results.
  • Read blueprints, weld symbols, and GD&T; verify weld quality through visual inspection and coordination with Quality on sectioning, penetration checks, and dimensional checks.
  • Troubleshoot program, robot, laser, and fixture issues to reduce downtime and scrap.
  • Train and support operators in running cells, changeovers, and basic fault recovery.
  • Maintain program backups, revision control, and weld documentation to meet AS9100D and IATF 16949 requirements.
  • Follow safety procedures, including Class 4 laser safety, robot-cell lockout/tagout, and interlock protocols.
