About The Position

As part of an elite team building and improving mechanical systems and tooling operations at Starship manufacturing and launch facilities, the Laser Tracker Toolmaker directly contributes to the Starship program, including test flights and missions. The role uses laser trackers and related measurement software to collect and analyze geometric data, support fabrication and tooling operations, and help ensure work is completed safely and to SpaceX quality standards. The anticipated schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The employee must be willing to work all shifts, overtime, and/or weekends as needed. The work involves substantial standing, lifting, pushing and pulling, reaching, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and twisting, and may require working in temperatures over 80 degrees for six or more hours per day. Candidates must be capable of safely using an air-purifying respirator and operating heavy equipment and machinery. A pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical may be required to confirm these capabilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certification.
  • At least 2 years of millwright, machining, or industrial mechanic experience.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working with laser trackers or other 3D measurement equipment.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, overtime, and/or weekends as needed.
  • Must be capable of safely using an air-purifying respirator, operating heavy equipment and machinery, and performing the physical requirements of the job.
  • Must meet ITAR eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in applied science.
  • At least 2 years of experience with metrology software such as Verisurf or equivalent.
  • Experience analyzing data and generating data reports.
  • Experience using inspection tools and equipment such as micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, height gauges, optical comparators, profilometers, and CMM.
  • Experience with Leica laser trackers.
  • Strong understanding of geometric relationships.
  • Understanding of the manufacturing process for large structures from concept to completion.
  • Ability to precision-locate machines and details in extreme environments.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to visualize 3D space and integrate complex geometries on large and small fabrications.
  • Ability to use and learn a variety of software to observe, analyze, evaluate, and communicate pertinent information.
  • Demonstrated leadership and dependability.
  • Ability to adapt to an extremely dynamic work environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using critical thinking and prior experience.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of job-site safety and contribute ideas for working safely and effectively in new locations and changing environments.
  • Desire to integrate with teams that make rapid changes and contribute skills to team cohesion and effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints at all assembly levels using in-depth familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Collect geometric data using a laser tracker and model-based software such as Verisurf.
  • Determine and apply an appropriate reference system for each task, installing it on or off the part as needed.
  • Analyze collected data and provide direction for remaining tooling operations.
  • Integrate process monitoring with fabrication processes to locate welding and machining details.
  • Apply fabrication processes on large structures and account for environmental effects such as free states, temperature swings, and weld shrinkage.
  • Communicate effectively with fabricators, machinists, assemblers, engineers, and other parties as needed.
  • Ensure operations can be performed safely and meet SpaceX quality standards.
  • Maintain an orderly environment that retains maximum utility for all team members.
