About The Position

As part of SpaceX’s Starship Launch Hardware Fabrication & Tooling team, the Laser Tracker Toolmaker helps build and improve the mechanical systems at rocket launch facilities. The role contributes directly to launch hardware fabrication and future launches by collecting and analyzing geometric data, establishing reference systems, and supporting fabrication, machining, and assembly operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience in a manufacturing/production or tooling environment.
  • Pass an Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral.
  • Ability to work the 6:00 PM–6:00 AM shift.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when needed to meet critical launch milestones.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, twist the upper body, work in cramped positions and small openings, and climb hand over hand.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 100 feet.
  • Ability to work in extreme outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and rain, and in environments with fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Ability to travel to other sites up to 15% of the time.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with laser trackers, model-based metrology, data analysis and reporting, and/or Verisurf X.
  • Experience with inspection equipment such as micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, height gauges, optical comparators, profilometers, CMMs, and laser trackers.
  • Experience with Leica laser trackers.
  • Understanding of geometric relationships.
  • Understanding of the manufacturing process for large structures from concept to completion.
  • Ability to precisely locate machines and details in extreme environments.
  • Ability to visualize 3D space and integrate complex geometries on large and small fabrications.
  • Ability to use and learn a variety of software to observe, analyze, evaluate, and communicate pertinent information.
  • Demonstrated leadership and dependability.
  • Ability to adapt to an extremely dynamic work environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to find solutions through diverse thinking and varied experience.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of job-site safety and suggest ways to work safely and effectively in new locations and changing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints at all assembly levels using in-depth familiarity with GD&T.
  • Collect geometric data with a laser tracker through model-based software such as Verisurf.
  • Determine how to establish a reference system for a task, then apply and install it on and off the part.
  • Analyze collected data and evaluate it to guide remaining operations.
  • Integrate process monitoring with fabrication to locate welding and machining details.
  • Understand and apply fabrication processes and environmental effects on large structures, including free states, temperature swings, and weld shrinkage.
  • Communicate effectively with fabricators, machinists, assemblers, engineers, and other parties as required.
