About The Position

The University of Florida, Large Animal Hospital is recruiting 2-3 Large Animal Veterinary Assistants. This is a position that requires a motivated, well-organized, and caring individual. Experience in handling horses is preferred, but experience with other large farm animal species will be considered. As a member of our staff, this individual will provide assistance for client services, helping veterinary technicians with patient handling and restraint, supply stocking, equipment care and cleaning.

Requirements

  • Must be reliable, responsible and self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Must possess the physical ability to handle, manipulate and restrain large animals and be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Must have basic computing skills
  • Must possess the ability to maintain effective working relationships others
  • Must possess the ability to multi-task.
  • Understand basic medical terminology
  • Be able to maintain a positive attitude at work
  • Be able to willingly accept constructive criticism from senior staff and clinicians
  • Will not engage in public derogatory discussions regarding coworkers, referring veterinarians, clinicians, or students
  • Ability to follow the appropriate chain of commands
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs, bend, kneel, pull, push, twist and stand for an extended period of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in handling horses is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Move, handle and restrain patients, including loading and unloading from transport.
  • Admit and Discharge patients
  • Escort visiting clients
  • Feed, hand walk, graze and groom patients
  • Set up, break down and clean equipment and exam areas
  • Clean stalls and maintain a clean/sanitary and functionally organized clinical service area
  • Maintain supply inventory and replenish stock
  • Laundry
  • Utilize chemical cleaning and disinfection agents in a safe manner
  • Monitor, record and report physical signs of patients
  • Administer topical treatments and hydrotherapy
  • Assist in minor procedures and treatments
  • Collect Salmonella samples and submit lab requests
  • Verify and enter charges into computerized medical record
  • Collect payments/deposits
