About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting the Large Animal Hospital Manager with operations. Key duties include hiring, training, scheduling, and overseeing support staff to ensure a clean, sanitary, and organized clinical service area. The role involves direct patient care support, facility maintenance, groundskeeping, and inventory management. The Assistant Manager will also be responsible for ensuring facilities and equipment are in good working order and coordinating repairs. This is a full-time position with varying shifts, including weekends, holidays, and on-call duties. The position is considered essential personnel and may require reporting to work during campus closures. Travel to other hospital locations may be required.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree and four years of relevant experience; OR a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of relevant experience.
  • Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Experience within the past 2 years.
  • Experience within a veterinary hospital setting.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs, bend, kneel, pull, push, twist and stand for an extended period of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in an environment that required handling and restraining horses daily.
  • Previous experience supervising workers.
  • Previous experience handling other large farm animals.
  • At least one year of experience utilizing equipment in farm facility maintenance.
  • General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, schedule, assist, and provide oversight of Large Animal Support Staff.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and functionally organized clinical service area in accordance with hospital protocols and Bio-Security directives.
  • Clean, strip, scrub, and disinfect stalls, hallways, and procedure areas.
  • Utilize chemical cleaning and disinfection agents safely.
  • Handle loading, handling, and disposal of trash, bio waste, and hazardous material.
  • Assist with the induction and recovery of anesthetized patients.
  • Maintain, order, and manage supply inventory, including sanitation supplies, fuel, shavings, feed, and hay.
  • Keep facilities in good condition, making repairs as needed.
  • Maintain hospital, barns, fences, and grounds in an attractive, sanitary, and functional manner.
  • Proactively monitor grounds, including weed and pest management, mowing pastures, fertilizing, dragging, and watering.
  • Notify Veterinary Hospital Management of any facilities or equipment in need of repair.
  • Arrange, perform, and track maintenance service checks and repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Under the direction of Veterinary Medical staff, assist with feeding, grooming, restraining, or exercising patients.
  • Administer topical medications and hydrotherapy, including loading and unloading.
