About The Position

This is advanced semi-skilled landscaping work on City properties. An employee in this class, individually or as part of a crew, plants and maintains trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers in parks and other City properties. Works under general supervision on routine or repetitive assignments and under close supervision on special or unusual assignments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in landscaping or nursery work, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
  • Possession of or must obtain within 120 days of employment a valid State of Ohio class B commercial driver's license (endorsements as required by division).
  • Knowledge of the types, propagation, and cultivation of trees, shrubs, bushes, grasses and flowers.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, methods, practices, hazards and safety precautions associated with general landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for preparing and applying pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records pertaining to daily work activity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor out-of-doors.
  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, fertilizing, watering and mulching of trees, shrubs and flowers.
  • Prepares and plants new lawns, installs sod, renovates existing lawns, maintains lawns by watering, feeding, mowing, edging and controlling weeks, insects and fungus.
  • Prepares and applies pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, maintains records of application.
  • Fills and maintains baseball diamonds and athletic facilities.
  • Operates construction equipment including front end loader, packer truck, dump truck, truck mounted crane, and tractor for a variety of purposes.
  • Performs a variety of manual laboring tasks using hand tools, wheelbarrows, etc.
  • Assists in litter control, waste collection, and leaf removal.
  • Drives truck to transport employees and materials.
  • Operates heavy trucks with salt spreader and plow attachments for snow removal and ice control purposes.
  • Operates bucket truck for installation, removal and repair of street banners and decorations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment to keep in satisfactory condition.
  • Serves as lead person for laborers and semi-skilled laborers involved in landscaping activities.
  • Communicates with other employees and supervisors using a two way mobile radio.
  • Performs related work as required.
