Landscape Internship
About The Position
Focal Pointe's 2027 Summer Landscape Internship offers a unique opportunity to explore various facets of the professional landscape industry. This program is designed for individuals who enjoy working outdoors and are looking to gain hands-on experience in a large-scale commercial landscape company. Interns will rotate through different departments, including horticulture, irrigation, construction, design, client relationships, and business operations. The internship emphasizes practical application and discovery of potential career paths within the industry, rather than repetitive tasks. The program aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how different areas of the business function together to serve clients and operate effectively. Interns will have the chance to work alongside experienced professionals, gaining insights into estate gardening, commercial maintenance, irrigation systems, plant health care, landscape construction, account management, design, and business operations. A self-selected area of focus based on career interests will also be included, with opportunities for extended time in a chosen field towards the end of the program.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a college degree and have completed approximately 60 credit hours.
- Interest in horticulture, agriculture, landscape architecture, construction, business, or a related field.
- Love working outdoors.
- Curiosity and willingness to ask questions.
- Desire for hands-on experience.
- Enjoy working as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn from people throughout the organization.
- Desire to understand career opportunities within the landscape industry.
- Ability to safely perform physical responsibilities associated with outdoor landscape work, with reasonable accommodations when applicable.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, bend, reach, push, pull, and lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
- Rotate through different areas of the business, including horticulture, irrigation, construction, design, client relationships, and business operations.
- Work alongside experienced professionals in the landscape industry.
- Gain hands-on experience in areas such as estate gardening, commercial landscape maintenance, irrigation installation and repair, plant health care, and landscape construction.
- Assist with landscape installation and field layout.
- Learn about annual and perennial plant care.
- Assist with irrigation installation, troubleshooting, startups, and repairs.
- Learn about Plant Health Care practices and equipment.
- Take site measurements for estimating and bidding.
- Understand how landscape designs move from concept to installation.
- Shadow Account Managers to learn about building and maintaining client relationships.
- Work alongside Operations Managers to understand team and project management.
- Learn about the business operations that support a commercial landscape company.
