About The Position

The Solid Waste & Recycling Division is responsible for disposing of municipal solid waste generated in Gaston County in accordance with North Carolina law and applicable local regulations. The County uses an integrated solid waste management plan that includes sanitary landfilling, compost and mulch, recycling, and related waste-reduction programs. The Landfill Operator operates and inspects heavy equipment, supports landfill infrastructure maintenance, and helps maintain safe and orderly landfill operations. The anticipated hiring range is $20.43–$24.26.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years of heavy equipment operations experience.
Obtain SWANA Landfill Operations Specialist certification within six months of hire.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to perform work involving a chance of major injury or loss of life, prolonged exposure to hazardous working conditions, or severe weather conditions.

Responsibilities

Operate a compactor on the municipal solid waste working face.
Place garbage in the correct location, build lifts, and create sideslopes.
Operate bulldozers, graders, loaders, excavators, dump trucks, and compactors as needed.
Inspect equipment operated during the day and complete the daily inspection log.
Check fluid and grease levels and perform visual inspections and routine equipment maintenance.
Provide general maintenance support for landfill infrastructure.
Excavate and move dirt and debris according to defined procedures.
Report unsafe working conditions or hazardous materials.
Work as needed at special events, including Household Hazardous Waste collections and mulch sales.
Remove rock from new construction areas and help maintain haul roads.
Direct traffic into and out of working-face areas and maintain safety procedures between County employees and hauling vehicles.
Provide general information to the public.
Install fencing and cut trees and brush.
