About The Position

The Landfill Engineer Trainee participates in a formal 12-month training program under the mentorship of experienced technical staff and managers. The program develops an understanding of waste management processes, including landfill operations, regulatory permitting and compliance, construction, and environmental management systems. The role also provides exposure to project planning and budgeting, accounting, contract negotiations, regulatory interaction, construction oversight, and operations.

Requirements

• Accredited bachelor's degree in engineering or a similar area of study.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a formal 12-month training program to develop skills supporting the engineering aspects of an operating landfill.
• Develop an understanding of permits governing the construction and operation of landfill disposal sites and other operations, including waste transfer stations, collection operations, and material recovery facilities.
• Work with professional consulting firms to prepare regulatory documents, such as permit applications, ensuring consistency with regulatory requirements and site conditions and considering safety, design, constructability, quality, compliance, efficiency, and cost savings.
• Assist and work alongside senior-level engineers on construction projects.
• Work with operations teams to ensure permit compliance and prevent or resolve operational issues.
• Assist with the preparation or review of engineering, monitoring, and environmental reports.
• Assist with environmental reviews and audits.
• Work with landfill managers to develop short- and long-term goals and action plans aligned with company objectives.
• Assist in estimating costs for identified site capital needs and follow through on their inclusion in annual budget exercises.
• Interact with state and local agencies to foster positive working relationships and support efficient, effective regulatory compliance.
• Review and understand engineering and technical directives and Best Management Practices, and implement them at assigned sites.
• Provide technical support to operations and environmental staff, including landfill gas technicians, and other functional areas.
• Participate in continuing education and seek opportunities to integrate new knowledge, technologies, and innovations into operations.
