About The Position

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 3 Office is seeking a skilled professional Land Surveyor to join their team in Northwest Iowa. This role is crucial in compiling and analyzing research data and field measurements for vital transportation projects. The Land Surveyor will collaborate with the Senior Land Surveyor and Development Engineer to lead and coordinate District Survey activities, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and excellence. Applicants eligible to obtain a Professional Land Surveyor license in Iowa within 3 months of hire will be considered. The position has an adjusted starting pay of $76,377.60, negotiable within the pay scale range based on experience for non-state employees.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current professional land surveyors license as issued by the Iowa Board of Engineering and Land Surveying.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa Class C Non-Commercial Driver's License.
  • Applicants eligible to obtain a Professional Land Surveyor license in Iowa within 3 months of hire will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field survey crews in performing land, topographic, and construction surveys.
  • Apply land surveying laws and legal principles to help re-establish real property boundaries and support the District Right-of-Way Department in coordinating field survey activities.
  • Operate and maintain advanced surveying equipment – including total stations, data collectors, and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers – to conduct field reconnaissance and capture precise measurements.
  • Utilize specialized computer software such as coordinate geometry (COGO), computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), and data collection editors.
  • Research land ownership and historical records, identifying reliable information sources to determine property boundaries and land corners, including conducting research in county courthouses, city offices, and private engineering or survey firms.
  • Review engineering plans and specifications to ensure collected data meets standards required for accurate survey documentation.
  • Create detailed survey plats using CADD, performing algebraic and trigonometric calculations needed to close survey configurations and ensure complete, accurate results.
  • Inspect survey work for accuracy and compliance, evaluating both completed and ongoing projects to verify that all standards and requirements are met.
  • Prepare and review Public Land Corner Certifications in accordance with Iowa Code Chapter 114A.11.
