About The Position

Operates and maintains land management equipment under a wide variety of conditions to provide support within the Bureau of Land Management. This role involves operating and maintaining fire management equipment, installing and maintaining pre-suppression fire lines, ensuring compliance with Silvicultural BMP's, providing dozer/plow equipment stand-by during prescribed fire operations, and assisting with prescribed fire and wildfire suppression operations. The technician will also assist with forest and land management projects such as marking timber, cruising timber, site preparation, and reforestation. Additionally, the role includes conducting wildlife and plant surveys, trail maintenance, boundary maintenance projects, and assisting with the coordination of contractors. Operation and maintenance of equipment for fuels management, restoration, and land maintenance projects are also key responsibilities, along with assisting with public use access maintenance, fence and gate repair, and signage posting. Administrative tasks such as submitting weekly schedules, time sheets, and monthly activity reports, as well as attending meetings, are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate and work well with others as a team.
  • Ability to endure harsh outdoor environments in uncomfortable/extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.
  • Ability to lift and/or move equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a priority of safety, make effective, consistent, and defensible decisions in the field.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate vehicles/vessels to access sites (e.g. ATV, airboats, marsh masters, and four-wheel drive truck).
  • A high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year of experience in natural resource management.
  • A valid Florida Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker N endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months from date of hire.
  • Must pass a drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains fire management equipment under a wide variety of conditions to provide support within the Bureau of Land Management.
  • Installs and maintains pre-suppression fire lines.
  • Ensures that fire lines are in compliance with the applicable Silvicultural BMP's.
  • Provides dozer/plow equipment stand-by during prescribed fire operations.
  • Assists with prescribed fire and wildfire suppression operations.
  • Assists with forest and land management projects including marking timber, cruising timber, site preparation and reforestation.
  • Conducts wildlife and plant surveys, trail maintenance and boundary maintenance projects.
  • Assists with the coordination of contractors to ensure contract specifications are followed.
  • Operates and maintains equipment utilized in support of fuels management, restoration, and land maintenance projects such as farm tractors with mowers, roller choppers, harrows, tillers, mulchers, Marsh Masters, airboats, etc.
  • Assists with public use access maintenance, fence and gate repair, signage posting, etc.
  • Performs administrative tasks including the submission of weekly schedules, time sheets, monthly activity reports.
  • Attends various meetings.
