About The Position

Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Lactation Specialist to join our team! This role provides support, encouragement, and education for breastfeeding mothers and infants in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. The specialist performs specialized lactation assessments, charts findings appropriately, and educates staff on evidence-based practices related to infant feedings, lactation, formula, and assistive devices. They notify appropriate care providers of abnormal assessments and concerns regarding the mother and infant, offering suggestions for safety and good outcomes. The Lactation Specialist is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for breastfeeding dyads and pumping parents. This role requires full collaboration with the patient, their family, significant others, and members of the healthcare team. The Lactation Specialist demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation, functioning within their scope of practice as an integral member of the health care team.

Requirements

  • Must be a current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) OR Completed the “Certified Lactation Counselor” (CLC) program or “Certified Lactation Educator” (CLE) with certificate.
  • CLC or CLE will continue their education to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) encouraged to obtain within 2 years of hire.
  • Preferably at least 1 year of experience on a postpartum unit where breastfeeding education and assessments were provided.

Responsibilities

  • Actively promotes breastfeeding and assists mothers in reaching their personal goals for breastfeeding.
  • Provides direct patient care in Labor, Postpartum, and NICU.
  • Performs specialized latch and breastfeeding assessment and evaluation.
  • Supports programs such as support groups and breastfeeding classes.
  • Organizes information and posters for activities to promote breastfeeding.
  • Assists with patient, family and staff breastfeeding education in coordination with the Postpartum Educator.
  • Communicates with primary care nurses and/or providers regarding mother or infant abnormal findings (problems with milk supply, problems with infant weights, jaundice, SGA…..etc.).
  • Implements and maintains a reference library of breastfeeding materials appropriate for both healthcare providers and mothers interested in learning more about lactation.
  • Assess patient and family emotional, cognitive, social, and motivational status relative to learning and determines their educational needs and priorities.
  • Adjusts teaching/feeding plan to meet patient and family needs.
