About The Position

Provides a variety of education and support services for breastfeeding patients and their families, the Women and Infant Care population, medical staff, and the community. This position requires the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients. The lactation consultant must understand growth and development principles across the lifespan and be able to assess and interpret patient data to identify and meet age-specific needs according to department policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners within 2 Years (Required)
  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Upon Hire (Required)
  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) - Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP) Upon Hire (Required)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors Degree, Lactation or equivalent program (Preferred)
  • 2 years Lactation consulting experience (Preferred)
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates consistent fiscal accountability, including recommendations and participation in supply utilization changes that support cost containment.
  • Participates and provides feedback in new equipment/product evaluations.
  • Identifies and recommends solutions for cost savings and waste reduction.
  • Informs breastfeeding patients of available resources, such as private outpatient lactation consultation appointments, hospital-grade breast pump rentals, and assisting with work orders for breast pump orders from DME.
  • Assists patients/customers in obtaining physician orders for breast pump orders or outpatient lactation consultations.
  • Properly schedules patients’ outpatient lactation consultation appointments in iCare.
  • Understands clinical department charge capture and charge reconciliation within iCare and monitors charges.
  • Maintains all documentation without supervision, including Mother Baby Dyad electronic Health Record charting for inpatients and during outpatient lactation consultations.
  • Actively participates in Women and Infant Care Complex (WICU, L&D and NICU) department and facility staff meetings and in-services to improve patient care, unit GPW scores, and service standards.
  • Seeks opportunities to provide in-service breastfeeding educational training.
  • Participates in the orientation of new nurses/lactation consultants by including them to shadow as they round on patients who have chosen to breastfeed.
  • Rounds on all new inpatient mothers in the Women and Infant Care Unit, assessing and providing education and encouragement to mothers breastfeeding their babies as needed.
  • Delivers quality breastfeeding assistance, support, and resources to help mothers start breastfeeding successfully.
  • Provides a free breastfeeding support group for patients after discharge to continue education and skill development.
  • Provides private outpatient lactation consultation as needed.
  • Recognizes and responds to variances in patient care/condition, including notification to the Physician and team.
  • Builds trusting collaborative relationships with patients, families, staff peers, physicians, and other disciplines/ancillary services.
  • Completes the problem-solving cycle from identification to problem resolution, utilizing interaction and collaboration with OB physicians, Neonatologists, and nurses from L&D, NICU, and Women and Infant Care.
