About The Position

Building and maintaining provincial infrastructure is a significant task. The Department of Public Works manages 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. The District Highway Operations Division is crucial for managing snow and ice control, road maintenance, and repair services throughout the province. This role offers summer students practical experience, training, and mentorship from qualified professionals, providing an opportunity to understand bridge and highway construction and contribute to the Provincial road network.

Requirements

  • High school student, at least 16 years of age.
  • Returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license is preferred, and an acceptable driver abstract must be submitted before employment begins.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in highway and bridge construction and maintenance activities.
  • Excellent communicator who provides professional customer service.
  • Team player.
  • Safety aware.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in situations.
  • Ability to follow safe work practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with construction sites.
  • Exposure to heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with a wide range of highway construction and maintenance duties.
  • Participate in traffic control.
  • Perform manual brush cutting.
  • Paint lines and trucks.
  • Conduct litter pickup and general building and yard maintenance.
  • Install culverts.
  • Perform road surface maintenance.
  • Install guardrails.
  • Collaborate with various staff on special projects to enhance and develop skills.
