Laborer - Water Quality/Sewer Maintenance (Full-time)
About The Position
Under the Department of Public Works, this full-time role performs manual work maintaining the city’s sanitary sewer collection and storm water drainage systems. Division projects include street cleaning, asphalt and concrete work, sewer repair and maintenance, easement and right-of-way clearing, and snow removal in coordination with other Public Works divisions. The position also supports as many as 100 community special events, such as concerts, 5K runs, and holiday events. The City of Fishers DPW holds American Public Works Association certification for compliance with recommended public works management practices. The position is full-time at 35 hours per week, with occasional opportunity for overtime. It requires availability to work outside normal business hours when necessary, including snow-plow duties.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Indiana driver's license and ability to be insured to drive City vehicles; three years of experience as a licensed driver is required.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year of hire.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Working knowledge of light- to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including trucks, tractors, and small machines.
- Ability to climb ladders and maintain balance.
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a variety of people.
- Ability to handle several projects at the same time.
- Availability to work outside normal business hours when necessary, including snow-plow duties.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in wastewater treatment, storm-water management, or a related field.
Responsibilities
- Perform curb and inlet repairs.
- Assist with visual inspections.
- Clean sewers using a sewer jet machine.
- Sweep streets.
- Raise manhole covers when they are buried or below ground level.
- Perform sewer line repairs.
- Trim trees and bushes along sewer easements and rights of way.
- Assist with snow removal from City streets.
- Assist the Public Works Department as necessary.
- Clean the shop and equipment as necessary.
- Support community special events.
