Laborer III performs tasks of more than ordinary difficulty and must be able to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. Compared with Laborer I and II, the role requires greater skill and knowledge of departmental operations and less supervision. The Laborer III lays out assignment details, checks work during and after completion, or performs routine tasks independently after initial instruction. The position may assist Laborers II and Equipment Operators I and II in maintaining and repairing stormwater and wastewater collection facilities, and may lead the crew when a supervisor is absent. The role supports sewer maintenance and other Public Works operations, including sewer inspection, flushing, installation, repair, and maintenance; restoration of streets and sidewalks; snow and ice operations; and responding to residents and emergencies. The position uses a computer and related software or the Cityworks asset management system to document work orders, completed work, and customer complaints. It requires successful completion of a background check, DOT drug testing, and a physical examination, and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME - Labor & Trades.
