Performs responsible technical work performing chemical and biological tests in a wastewater treatment plant laboratory necessary for the monitoring of effluent quality; participates in plant operations and maintenance as needed. An employee in this class collects samples, calibrates equipment, and performs a variety of chemical and biological tests to ensure the safe operation of domestic and commercial water and waste treatment. Work also includes maintaining a database of laboratory results and information, completing necessary reports, and maintaining records and files. The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and chemical work, including exposure to electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation. Work with raw sewage may also be subject to the final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for conformance to testing and reporting procedures and accuracy.
